The Secret to Summer Shine? It’s All in the Soil

Back to Articles

As we finally trade our winter parkas for light jackets here in Spruce Grove, many of us are focused on refreshing our wardrobes and our gardens. But in the world of professional hair care, May is the month of “The Great Reset.” We’ve spent months under beanies in dry, indoor heat, and our hair is often feeling the fatigue.

If you want your hair to shine this summer, we need to stop looking at the ends and start looking at the roots. In 2026, we are embracing the “Skin-ification” of hair.

Think of your scalp as the soil and your hair as the garden. You can’t grow a vibrant, healthy garden in depleted, congested soil. Throughout an Alberta winter, our scalps battle extreme dryness, leading to a “tight” feeling or flaky buildup. When you add in the heavy dry shampoos we use to bridge the gap between washes, you end up with “suffocated” follicles.

The Spring Detox

To get that bouncy, effortless summer hair, I recommend a three-step spring transition:

  • The Scalp Reset: Switch from heavy, moisture-trapping winter products to a pH-balanced scalp serum or a gentle exfoliating treatment. This removes the “biofilm” of product buildup and environmental pollutants.
  • Hydration vs. Moisture: In May, we shift from heavy oils (moisture) to lightweight, water-based hydrators. This ensures your hair has the elasticity to handle the upcoming humidity without feeling weighed down.
  • The Professional Edge: If you’re noticing your hair feels dull despite using good products, it might be mineral buildup from our local water. A professional “Scalp Facial” in the salon can do more in 45 minutes than a month of at-home scrubbing.

At Raven Hair Design, we believe that luxury hair isn’t just about the perfect cut or color—it’s about the health of the canvas. This May, I encourage you to treat your scalp with the same love you give your skincare routine. Your hair will thank you by the time the first long weekend at the lake rolls around!
