Your AC Is About to Work Overtime: Here’s How to Avoid a Costly Surprise This Summer

Back to Articles

Sacramento summers don’t ease in. One week it’s 75, the next it’s 105 and your air conditioner is running nonstop. That’s when we get the calls. Homeowners who skipped their spring maintenance, ignored a strange noise, or didn’t realize their system was nearing the end of its life. By then, the repair bill can be steep, and with equipment and material costs continuing to climb, waiting only makes it more expensive.

After more than 20 years in this industry and over 26 years living right here in West Sacramento, I’ve seen the same pattern every year. The homeowners who get ahead of summer almost never end up in emergency mode. Here are three things you can do right now to protect your home and your wallet.

1. Check Your Outdoor Unit

Walk outside and look at your condenser. If the coils are caked with dust, dirt, or cottonwood, your system is working harder than it needs to. That means higher energy bills and faster wear on expensive components like the compressor. A quick visual check takes 30 seconds and can save you thousands.

2. Replace Your Filter (Yes, Again)

Most homeowners know they should change their filter. Most don’t do it often enough. A clogged filter restricts airflow, forces your system to work overtime, and can freeze your evaporator coil. In Sacramento’s dusty spring conditions, filters can clog faster than the manufacturer’s recommended schedule. Check it monthly and replace it when it looks dirty.

3. Get a Professional Tune-Up Before the Rush

A trained technician will catch problems you can’t see: low refrigerant, failing capacitors, worn contactors, electrical issues. These are the small things that turn into big problems on the hottest day of the year. A tune-up now costs a fraction of what an emergency repair does in the middle of July.

Why Planning Ahead Saves You Money

Equipment and material costs have gone up significantly over the past few years, and they’re not coming back down. When you plan ahead, you have time to explore your options, take advantage of rebates and financing, and choose energy-efficient equipment that lowers your bills for years to come. When you wait until something breaks, you lose all of that. You’re making a rushed decision under pressure, and that’s never when you get the best outcome.
