At Washington Unified Virtual Academy (WUVA), we know that one size does not fit all when it comes to school.
From my perspective as principal, WUVA has become a place for students who need school to look and feel a little different in order to thrive. We serve grades 4-8, and many of our students come to us after trying a traditional setting that no longer fits—whether that’s because of health challenges, anxiety, social pressures, or changes at home. Some arrive from Washington Unified schools, others from neighboring districts, but their families share a common hope: a more supportive, flexible environment where their child can focus, feel understood, and rebuild confidence. Over time, I’ve seen students who were hesitant or overwhelmed in other settings begin to reengage, participate, and take ownership of their learning once they find that better fit here at WUVA.
What they all have in common is the need for a school that meets them where they are. WUVA is a full-day virtual program that provides a structured, high-quality education aligned to California grade-level standards. Students participate in live, teacher-led instruction in English Language Arts and Mathematics each day. They also receive additional grade-level support from our paraeducator to ensure they stay engaged and on track. Science and History are taught through asynchronous, grade-level lessons, allowing students to work at a steady and manageable pace.
As part of the Washington Unified School District, our program follows the same district calendar, including daily instructional hours from 8:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and all scheduled school breaks. Students have access to district-adopted curriculum in English, Math, Science, and History, and our teachers partner closely with families to support each child both academically and personally.
In addition to core instruction, students participate in a virtual physical education program with asynchronous lessons, as well as weekly live music instruction. We also provide materials for hands-on visual art projects that students can complete at home, helping to ensure creativity remains part of their learning experience.
Throughout the year, students are invited to optional in-person days focused on connection and community. These days provide opportunities for socialization, team-building, quarterly assessments, and hands-on learning experiences such as STEM challenges and art projects.
For some students, WUVA is a long-term fit. For others, it’s a short-term support during a challenging time. In either case, our goal is the same: to provide a stable, supportive environment where students can continue to learn, grow, and feel successful.
If you are wondering whether a different learning environment might better support your child, we encourage you to reach out and learn more.
