Every fall, my phone rings with the same kind of call. A homeowner spent all summer dreaming about a new kitchen, an addition, or a whole-floor renovation, and now they want to get started before the holidays. I get it. But by that point, we’re already behind. The most successful large-scale renovations don’t begin with a sledgehammer. They begin with a conversation, months before construction ever starts.
If you’re a Point Pleasant homeowner thinking about a big project, right now is the time to start planning for a winter build. I know that sounds early. But a real renovation involves a lot more than picking out finishes. There’s the design and scope discussion, architectural drawings, engineering reviews, municipal permitting, material selection, and contractor scheduling. In most New Jersey towns, permitting alone takes weeks to months. Add in lead times for custom cabinetry, windows, or specialty materials, and you’re looking at a six-month runway before anyone picks up a tool.
And here’s something most people don’t think about: winter is actually a great time to build. Contractors have more availability between November and March, which means better scheduling and fewer delays. Your project gets more focused attention. If the work is interior (kitchen, bathroom, basement, living space), the weather outside doesn’t matter one bit.
The biggest mistake I see homeowners make isn’t choosing the wrong tile or cabinet color. It’s waiting too long to start planning and then feeling rushed when the decisions actually matter. When you give yourself time, you make better choices, you avoid costly change orders, and you walk into construction day with a clear plan that everyone feels good about.
One thing I always recommend is having a budget conversation with your general contractor before you hire an architect or engineer. A good GC can help you understand what’s realistic for your budget, what the project is likely to cost, and where it makes sense to invest. That way, when you do bring in a design professional, everyone is working from the same page and you’re not paying for plans you can’t afford to build.
I’m always happy to sit down for an early conversation, even if you’re not sure what you want yet. We’ll talk through your goals, walk through your space, and put together a realistic timeline and budget so that when winter comes around, you’re not scrambling. You’re building.
Thinking about a renovation? Let’s start the conversation now. No pressure, just a plan.
