National Oral Health Month is in June and it serves as a great opportunity to recognize the importance of how oral health can impact your overall health. Your mouth is a window to your body and serves as a gateway to your overall health and wellness.
As a dental health professional we try to educate our community through workshops, social media campaigns and school visits. During these visits we try to educate participants on ways to maintain good oral health. Areas that we emphasize include proper brushing and flossing techniques, healthy eating habits, and the importance of regular dental checkups. Other areas of emphasis include wearing mouth guards to prevent dental injuries during sports, staying hydrated and tobacco cessation.
Consistent good oral health care not only helps prevent oral diseases but also plays a significant role in reducing the risk of serious health conditions. Research has shown a strong connection between oral health and other medical conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, respiratory problems and adverse pregnancy outcomes. Also, there are oral signs of sleep apnea that can be diagnosed during routine dental check ups.
Your mouth is the starting point for everything that enters your body so making good oral health a priority is important for your overall health and wellness. A healthy beautiful smile takes effort, but it is well worth it!
