The Silent Wear and Tear on Your Roof (and How to Spot It)

Your roof doesn’t usually fail all at once. It gives you warning signs. The challenge today is those signs are harder to spot than they used to be.

Thirty or forty years ago, shingles would curl, crack, and practically wave at you from the driveway when they were done. Today’s asphalt shingles are engineered to look better longer. They lie flatter, resist curling, and can mask wear… right up until they don’t. That means many Ontario homeowners think their roof is fine when it’s actually near the end.

And our winters don’t help. Freeze-thaw cycles, heavy snow, and ice damming quietly weaken your roof year after year. By spring, the damage is often already there, even if everything still “looks” okay.

SO WHAT SHOULD YOU WATCH FOR?

Start with subtle changes. Look for shingles that appear slightly warped, blistered, or uneven in colour. Pay attention to your eavestroughs. If you’re seeing a buildup of granules, that’s a major red flag. Those granules protect your shingles, and once they’re gone, deterioration speeds up fast.

Check around roof features like vents, chimneys, and flashing. These are common failure points, especially after harsh winters. Small gaps or worn seals can let water in without obvious exterior damage.

Inside your home, the clues are clearer. Water stains, peeling paint near the ceiling, or a musty smell in the attic all point to moisture getting in. Don’t ignore these.

Ice dams are another big one here in Ontario. If you noticed thick ridges of ice along your roof edge this past winter, water likely backed up under your shingles. That kind of stress shortens your roof’s lifespan significantly.

Finally, consider age. If your roof is 15 to 25 years old, you’re in the danger zone, whether it looks fine or not.

Bottom line. Modern roofs hide problems better. That doesn’t mean they don’t exist. If you’re unsure, get it checked now while the weather is working in your favour.
