After years in the home remodeling business, I’ve walked through hundreds of homes across the Owensboro and Evansville areas. In almost every one of them, I notice the same thing — windows and doors that are quietly costing homeowners money and comfort, often without anyone realizing it.
The signs are usually right there. You just need to know what to look for.
The Draft You’ve Learned to Ignore
One of the most common things I hear is, “It’s always been a little drafty in that room.” That sentence tells me someone has been compensating for a failing window so long it just became normal. A properly installed, energy-efficient window should form a complete seal against the elements. If you feel outside air coming in around the frame, that window is no longer doing its job. You’re essentially paying to heat or cool the outdoors.
Condensation Between the Glass
Moisture on the interior surface of a window on a cold morning is normal. But if you see fog or condensation trapped between the two panes of glass, the seal on your insulated glass unit has failed. Once that seal breaks, the inert gas that provides insulation has escaped, and what you’re left with is essentially a single-pane window in a double-pane frame. The energy efficiency is gone.
Don’t Overlook Your Doors
Your exterior doors are part of the same system and fail in the same ways. A quick test: close your front door on a sunny day and look around the frame from inside. If you can see daylight, you have a gap. If you feel air movement at the bottom, the door sweep needs replacing. These are often inexpensive fixes that make a noticeable difference right away.
When to Replace
There is a point where repairs stop making financial sense. If your windows are original to a home built before the 1990s, modern windows will dramatically outperform them — reducing heat transfer, blocking UV rays that fade furniture and flooring, and holding up against decades of weather with very little maintenance.
Choosing the Right Contractor
Window and door installation is only as good as the installer. Improper installation can compromise even the highest-quality product. When choosing a contractor, ask about their installation process. Ask what they do if they find moisture damage or rot during the job. A contractor who answers those questions thoroughly and honestly is one worth trusting.
