A fire, tornado, theft, or major storm can happen with little warning. A detailed home inventory can help you remember what you owned, document what was damaged, and provide useful information when filing an insurance claim.

1. Walk Through Your Property

Take time to document possessions throughout your home and property. Include closets, cabinets, drawers, garages, sheds, attics, basements, outdoor furniture, tools, electronics, appliances, and sentimental items.

2. Photograph and Record

Photograph each room and important items. Record a brief description, where it was purchased, the make, model, and serial number when available. Then create a slow video walkthrough and describe items as you go.

3. Store It Somewhere Safe

Save digital copies in secure cloud storage or on an off-site backup. If you keep a paper inventory, store it in a fire-resistant safe, safe-deposit box, or another secure off-site location.

4. Keep It Current

Update your inventory whenever you make a significant purchase. Remove items you no longer own, add receipts and serial numbers, and review everything at least once a year.

5. Remember Special Assets

Include business equipment when applicable. Jewelry, artwork, antiques, and collectibles may need updated values or separate coverage. Review these items with your insurance professional.

START TONIGHT

Choose one room. Record a slow video, open every cabinet and closet, and save the file somewhere outside your home. One small step today could make an overwhelming tomorrow a little easier.
