Layering materials and finishes is what gives a kitchen depth, personality, and a truly custom feel — but balance is essential. One of the most effective design approaches is the 60-30-10 guideline: approximately 60% dominant material or finish, 30% secondary material, and 10% accent detail. In this kitchen, multiple elements were carefully integrated, including two tile applications, four metal finishes, existing and new wood tones, and a combination of polished and matte surfaces. Bringing vintage elements into a newly renovated space is another powerful way to add warmth and authenticity. Here, vintage ceiling tiles were thoughtfully installed within a framed cabinet door to conceal the baker’s cabinet, introducing character, texture, and a sense of history into the otherwise clean-lined design. The key to making a layered space successful is controlling proportion and repetition so the room feels intentional rather than overwhelming. Repeating tones throughout the kitchen, balancing warm and cool elements, and mixing textures with restraint creates a timeless, one-of-a-kind result that feels both elevated and deeply personal.
