In my last article, I explained what AI actually is. Now let me show you something surprising: you’ve been using AI for over a decade.
Your email’s secret weapon
Remember when spam was overwhelming? Around 2015, your inbox quietly got smarter. Gmail and other email services started using AI to filter junk mail with remarkable accuracy. That technology now catches 99% of spam before you see it. AI also powers those auto-complete suggestions when you type. Start writing “Thanks for your…” and your email guesses “patience” or “time.” That’s AI predicting what you mean.
Your phone knows you
Every time you unlock your phone with your face, AI is working. Face ID doesn’t store a simple photo. It learned the unique patterns of your face and recognizes you even with new glasses or a different haircut.
When you search your photos for “beach” or “birthday” and it finds the right pictures, AI identified what’s in those images. Nobody labeled them manually. Autocorrect? AI learning your typing patterns. Voice-to-text? AI understanding your speech.
Streaming and shopping
Netflix’s “You might like” suggestions come from AI analyzing viewing patterns of millions of people with similar tastes. Spotify’s Discover Weekly playlist uses the same approach with music. Amazon’s “Customers also bought” recommendations have used AI since the early 2000s. Those product suggestions account for about 35% of their total sales.
Maps and navigation
Google Maps doesn’t just know the roads. It predicts traffic. AI analyzes real-time data from millions of phones to estimate your arrival time. When it suggests a different route, AI calculated that option will save you time based on current conditions.
Banking and credit cards
Ever receive a fraud alert after an unusual purchase? AI noticed that transaction didn’t match your normal patterns. This technology prevents billions in fraud annually.
Why this matters
Understanding that AI already surrounds you removes some of the mystery. These aren’t experimental technologies from a lab. They’re tools you trust daily. The newer AI systems like ChatGPT are powerful, but they’re built on the same principles as the spam filter that’s protected your inbox for years. They find patterns, make predictions, and improve with experience.
Try this
This week, notice when AI is helping you. The spam that doesn’t reach you. The route that avoided traffic. The show recommendation you enjoyed. The fraud alert that wasn’t quite right (it happens).
You’ll start seeing it everywhere, because it is everywhere.
In my next article, I’ll show you how to have a conversation with the new generation of AI tools. It’s easier than you think.
