Modern Curb Appeal: Preparing Your Home to Sell

In New England, fall is a great time to sell your home, which means July is the perfect time to start preparing. One of the biggest factors in attracting buyers happens before they even step inside: curb appeal.

Traditionally, curb appeal referred to the impression formed when a buyer first saw a home from the street or pulled into the driveway. Today, curb appeal often starts on a screen. Many buyers are scrolling listings online late at night, quickly deciding which homes feel worth visiting in person. Bright exterior photos, simple landscaping, and clean, cared-for spaces matter more than ever because the photos are the first showing, and a home’s online presentation is today’s version of “curb appeal.”

After a long New England winter, simple updates can make a major difference without requiring a large investment.

One of the most impactful improvements is decluttering the exterior the same way you would the inside of your home. Overgrown landscaping, crowded porches, and too many personal touches can distract buyers from seeing themselves in the space. Keeping lawns freshly mowed, trimming shrubs so the front door is clearly visible, and simplifying outdoor areas can instantly create a more welcoming appearance.

Focus on low-cost, high-value updates. A freshly painted front door, touched-up white trim, clean windows, stained front steps or decks, and cleared gutters all help communicate that a home has been well cared for.

The goal is to create a space where buyers can imagine their own life there, not just yours.

One helpful strategy? Ask a friend to walk through your property with fresh eyes and imagine they’re seeing it for the first time. A fresh perspective can often spot things that someone more familiar with the home would overlook. The team at Canon Real Estate also loves hearing from homeowners who are in the early stages of considering putting their house on the market. An experienced realtor can help you determine which investments of time, money, and energy will give you the best return when preparing to sell.

Beyond appearance, homeowners should also think about practical maintenance before listing. Scheduling furnace, boiler, or mini split servicing early can help avoid last-minute stress during the busy fall season. Buyers appreciate homes that feel move-in ready, both cosmetically and mechanically.

Some final advice for local homeowners: don’t wait until the last minute.  The earlier you prepare, the more time you have to focus on the updates that truly give you the most value for your time and money. It’s never too soon to talk to a realtor or begin decluttering your home.
