When guiding a high school student through the college search process, consider these six critical factors:

  • Academic Interests

For students with specific career goals, it’s essential to research schools strong in those fields. A small liberal arts college with only a general business major may not suit a student interested in finance. Likewise, an engineering-focused institution may not be ideal for someone only mildly interested in STEM disciplines.

  • Variety of Options

Even students with defined career paths should explore colleges that offer a range of majors. Discuss first and second choices with your student, ensuring that the institutions of interest provide options in those fields.

  • Size

Each student has unique preferences regarding college size. Some may thrive in a larger setting with diverse academic options and opportunities, such as undergraduate research. Others might prefer a smaller environment, where personal attention is more prevalent. Encourage your student to weigh the pros and cons of varying school sizes.

  • Location

Consider the implications of attending school far from home. Discuss logistics like visiting family and potential support systems. Transitioning to college can be a challenge, and understanding whether your student can easily access their support network is important.

  • Campus Life

While academics are crucial, campus culture significantly impacts the overall college experience. Research student surveys on campus life, retention rates, and the availability of social and outdoor activities. Understanding how the college integrates with the surrounding community is also beneficial.

  • Clubs and Organizations

A vibrant student life fosters community engagement and offers opportunities for personal growth. Explore available clubs and organizations, including Greek life, sports, and academic groups.

Choosing a college is a substantial decision. Encourage thorough research, help prioritize factors, and maintain honesty throughout the process. With your and the college counselor’s support, your student will find their ideal college match for future success.
