LC: How do sun exposure, chlorine, and saltwater affect hair health and color?

MD: They all can strip down the protective barrier of the hair, extract the color leading to dry, brittle hair prone to breakage.

LC: What are the most common hair concerns clients come to you with during the summer?

MD: It can depend on the clients hair type and climate of the city they’re in so paying attention to those factors and establishing a plan to remedy. In Miami it’s frizz from the humidity baby!

LC: What Salon Dahlia specialized treatments do you recommend to restore moisture and repair summer-damaged hair?

MD A trim, deep moisture masks, keratins and clarifying treatments for salt and chlorine buildup.

LC: Can you explain the difference between a deep conditioning treatment, a bonding treatment, and a keratin treatment?

MD: Bonding and keratin treatments are great for preventative care and taking action before damage occurs. Deep conditioning is good for repair after a weekend at the beach.

LC: What treatments do you offer specifically for color-treated hair?

MD: Bonding and keratin services, a hair gloss or toner is great every couple weeks as it seals the hair cuticle and protects by reflecting UVs rather than the hair absorbing them.

LC: Are there any treatments that help reduce frizz caused by humidity?

MD: Keratins or smoothing treatments. They work by filling the hair to block humidity which stops frizz.

LC: What are the top three things everyone should be doing at home to keep their hair healthy this summer?

MD: There are sunscreen products for your hair, put regular sunscreen on your parts if you’re rocking braids or styles with lots of parts that expose your scalp, deep conditioning treatments when hair feels dry and hats and scarves…don’t let your hair fray from the wind, sun and salt on the boat girl!

LC: How often should people wash their hair during the summer, especially if they’re swimming or exercising frequently?

MD: They should wash every 2-3 days, HOWEVER, always rinse hair after the pool, ocean or workout. I also recommend filling the hair with a leave in conditioner before the pool or ocean. Hair is like a sponge, if it’s already filled it’s less vulnerable to absorbing salt and chemicals.

LC: Are there specific ingredients people should look for in their shampoos and conditioners?

MD: I recommend hydrating shampoos and conditioners and avoid anything with phthalates and parabens. Invest in the mid to high shelf hair care lines. I always say hair first, then the Chanel bag!

LC: What ingredients should they avoid?

MD: Cheap fillers like seed and coconut oils, it creates buildup and weighs hair down or too much alcohol which can dry it out more in addition to sun exposure.

LC: How important is using a leave-in conditioner or hair mask during the summer?

MD: It’s just as important as paying for the checked bag and insurance for your trip to Italy, just do it!

LC: What are your favorite summer hair trends this year?

MD: My all-time fav summer look that I think will always trend is the wet look. It’s quick and easy stepping off the boat or leaving the pool for lunch or din. Just rinse your hair, lightly towel dry, layer in a leave-in conditioner and sea salt spray and sashay huny! Gorgeous!
