Summer Skin Care: Adjusting Your Routine and Debunking the No Treatments in Summer Myth

As the temperatures rise and we spend more time outdoors, summer is the perfect time to reevaluate your skincare routine. Just as you swap sweaters for sundresses, your skin may benefit from seasonal adjustments to keep it healthy, protected, and glowing throughout the warmer months.

One of the most important changes to consider is your sunscreen. While daily SPF use should be a year-round habit, summer often requires stepping up your protection. Increased outdoor activities, longer days, swimming, sweating, and vacations can all impact how well your sunscreen performs. Some people may need to switch to a higher SPF, while others may benefit from a water-resistant formula for beach days or outdoor sports. The key is finding a sunscreen that fits your lifestyle and reapplying it consistently.

Your cleanser and moisturizer may also need a seasonal refresh. During the winter, many people rely on richer creams and hydrating cleansers to combat dry air and indoor heating. Summer often brings increased humidity, sweat, and oil production, making lightweight moisturizers and balancing cleansers a better fit. The goal is not to eliminate hydration but to provide your skin with what it needs based on the environment and your daily activities. SkinCeuticals has a wide range of moisturizers and cleansers for all skin types all year round.

One of the most common misconceptions I hear this time of year is that professional skin treatments must stop completely during the summer. While there are certainly situations where postponing a treatment makes sense, the reality is much more individualized than many people realize.

Take Laser Genesis, for example. This gentle laser treatment helps improve redness, fine lines, enlarged pores, and overall skin texture with little to no downtime. Because it is non-ablative and does not remove the outer layer of skin, many clients can safely receive Laser Genesis treatments during the summer months when proper sun protection is maintained.

The same conversation applies to laser hair removal. Contrary to popular belief, laser hair removal is not automatically off-limits during summer. The biggest concern is excessive sun exposure before and after treatment. If a client is spending every weekend at the beach working on a deep tan, treatment may need to be postponed. However, many people successfully continue laser hair removal throughout the summer by avoiding intentional tanning, wearing protective clothing, and using sunscreen consistently.

Microneedling and Microneedling RF are other treatments that can often be performed during the summer with proper precautions. Microneedling stimulates collagen production and improves concerns such as acne scars, fine lines, and skin texture. The treatment does temporarily increase skin sensitivity, making diligent sun protection especially important during the healing process. For clients who are committed to sunscreen use and limiting unnecessary sun exposure, microneedling can remain part
of their skincare plan year-round.

Chemical peels often receive the most hesitation when it comes to summer treatments. While deeper peels may require more careful planning, many superficial and medium- depth peels can be performed safely during the summer months. The decision depends on factors such as peel depth, the client’s skin type, upcoming travel plans, outdoor activities, and willingness to follow aftercare instructions.

I often remind clients that in South Texas, the Gulf Coast states, and South Florida, summer-like weather exists for much of the year. If we told everyone in those regions they couldn’t receive skin treatments because it’s sunny outside, many people would never be able to address their skincare concerns. Instead, skincare professionals evaluate each client’s lifestyle, habits, and commitment to protecting their skin.

The truth is that successful treatment outcomes are not determined solely by the season. They are determined by behavior. Are you wearing sunscreen every day? Are you reapplying when you’re outdoors? Are you wearing hats and seeking shade when possible? Are you following your home-care regimen as directed? These factors often play a much larger role than the calendar itself.

Summer can be an excellent time to invest in your skin. With the right products, proper sun protection, and guidance from a qualified skincare professional, many treatments can continue safely throughout the season. The best approach is not to assume every treatment must wait until fall, but rather to have an honest conversation about your lifestyle and create a plan that keeps your skin healthy, protected, and looking its best all year long.
