Physical activity plays a vital role in the healthy development of children and teenagers. In today’s world, where technology and screen time occupy the majority of young people’s daily lives, encouraging movement and exercise is more important than ever. It is recommended by organizations like Centers for Disease Control and World Health Organization that ages 6-17 years old exercise 60 minutes a day. From improving physical health to supporting mental well-being and academic success, regular activity provides many benefits that will impact youth for years to come. Activities such as sports, running, biking, and even playing outside help the body grow and develop.

The beauty of motivating our youth now is that not only will it positively impact their physical health, but also their mental health and abilities to learn. Physical activity reduces stress, improves mood, and boosts self-confidence. Studies have shown that active students often have better focus, memory, and academic performance in school.

In addition, physical activity helps the youth develop important social skills like teamwork, communication, and leadership through sports and group activities, setting them up for success in adulthood by encouraging them to begin and continue healthy habits. The school system has recently brought back the Presidential Physical Fitness Test into the PE curriculum. This test includes many aspects of strength from the core, upper body, and cardiovascular endurance. The main concept is that physical activity helps young people live healthier, happier lives both now and in the future. It is our job to support and promote exercise now more than ever.

Amber Peterson is the Program Director at The GYM Cape Carteret. She organizes the many activities and schedules, including aerobic classes and pickleball open play, social events, and tournaments.
