Helping people secure a mortgage is about much more than rates and paperwork. Through Todd Smith Mortgages, “Your Mortgage Coach,” with Dominion Lending Centres and Yellow Brick Mortgage Group Ltd., clients receive guidance, education, and support throughout one of the most important financial decisions of their lives.

A wide range of services is available to the community, including financing for home purchases, first-time homebuyers, mortgage renewals, debt consolidation, reverse mortgages, and equipment lease financing. The focus is always on helping clients understand their options and move forward with confidence.

Before entering the mortgage industry, Todd spent 30 years as a high school teacher in Simcoe County. After a rewarding career in education, he was ready for a new challenge and an opportunity to experience the private sector. What he discovered was a profession that allowed him to continue doing what he enjoys most: teaching, coaching, and helping people succeed.

That educational background continues to shape the way he serves clients today. Every relationship begins with listening, building trust, and creating a plan tailored to individual goals. Rather than simply finding a mortgage product, he believes in helping people understand the process so they can make informed decisions with confidence.

Clear communication, honest advice, and personalized solutions are the foundation of his approach. Whether someone is purchasing a first home, renewing a mortgage, refinancing, or exploring options to improve their financial situation, the goal remains the same: provide support and guidance every step of the way.

The opportunity to educate and assist others remains his greatest source of inspiration. Seeing clients achieve their goals and leave with greater confidence is one of the most rewarding aspects of the job.

His connection to the community extends well beyond the mortgage business. Having lived and worked locally for more than 25 years, he has spent countless hours coaching, refereeing, volunteering on community boards, and mentoring young athletes. Since 2014, he has operated Drive North Basketball, a skills academy that has helped young players develop both on and off the court.

After three decades of teaching and coaching, community involvement has become a way of life. Adding value to people’s lives and helping them succeed continues to be a guiding principle.

That same coaching mindset carries into the workday. Client meetings often take place virtually through Google Meet, where conversations frequently extend beyond mortgages. Sharing stories, exchanging a few laughs, and learning about clients’ lives helps create genuine relationships that often last long after the paperwork is complete.

Family remains at the centre of everything. He and his wife, Patti, have been married for 37 years after meeting at Laurier University, where Patti played varsity volleyball and he played varsity basketball. Together they have raised two daughters, Megan, a teacher in Barrie, and Katie, a cabinetmaker and retailer. Sports have always been a big part of family life, with basketball, rugby, baseball, hockey, and golf among their favourites.

When not working with clients or coaching athletes, he enjoys staying active through early morning weight training, high-intensity interval training, road cycling, and mountain biking.

Whether helping families navigate the mortgage process, mentoring young athletes, or volunteering in the community, the mission remains unchanged: educate first, coach always, and make a positive difference in people’s lives.
