Lately, I’ve had a lot of business owners around Carroll County ask me the same question: “Craig, is SEO dead now that AI is taking over Google?”
Not even close.
But SEO is changing, and honestly, it’s been evolving for years. The businesses that understand that — and more importantly, adapt to it — are the ones that will keep growing online over the next several years.
Google recently updated its search experience in a major way by blending AI directly into traditional search. In the past, somebody searched on Google, clicked on a website, and found their answer there.
Now, Google is creating a much more seamless transition between search and AI. A person may start with a regular search but quickly move into an AI-generated answer experience without even realizing it happened.
That matters because users are no longer always landing on websites the same way they used to.
For more complex questions, Google’s AI may summarize answers directly inside search results instead of sending users to individual pages. We’re even seeing this happen with local search results.
Traditionally, Google’s local “map pack” would show three businesses under the map. Now, in some cases, AI summarizes those options and highlights only one provider as the recommended choice.
For local businesses, that’s a big deal.
But here’s the important thing: this does not mean SEO is dead. In fact, I’d argue SEO matters more than ever. What’s changing is how businesses approach it.
Good SEO has never really been about tricks. At its core, SEO has always been about relevance. Are you useful? Are you knowledgeable? Are you trusted in your community? Do people recommend you? Does your website actually help answer questions people are searching for?
That was true before AI, and it’s still true now.
Around West Georgia, people still do business the old-fashioned way in many respects. Folks ask around. They trust word of mouth. They notice which businesses are involved in the community and which companies have built a reputation over time. You’ll still see dogs sitting out in the yard, neighbors waving from the driveway, and referrals happening at church softball games or local restaurants.
Believe it or not, Google’s AI is starting to think more like that, too.
It’s paying attention to signals beyond just your website. Reviews matter. Branding matters. Community presence matters. Social media engagement matters. The more your business is recognized and discussed online, the more Google views your company as authoritative and trustworthy.
That’s why modern SEO can’t exist in its own little silo anymore. Your website still matters tremendously, but so does your overall brand presence. The businesses that consistently show up, provide quality service, educate customers, and build real trust will still win online.
AI didn’t replace SEO. It simply raised the standard.
