August in Rehoboth means back-to-school shopping, new backpacks, fresh supplies, and busy family schedules.
But before the school year begins, there is one important item parents should not forget: a comprehensive eye exam.
Children rely on their vision all day, from reading the board and using tablets to completing homework, playing sports, and recognizing faces across the classroom. When a child cannot see clearly, school can feel harder than it should. Vision problems may lead to headaches, eye strain, trouble focusing, avoiding reading, losing place on the page, or appearing distracted in class.
As a developmental optometrist at Simon Eye, I provide specialized pediatric eye care for infants, children, and adolescents. My clinical focus includes strabismus, amblyopia, refractive and binocular vision disorders, double vision, and supporting healthy visual development throughout childhood.
With children, vision is closely connected to confidence, learning, and development. A child may not always know how to explain that something looks blurry, doubled, or uncomfortable. A back-to-school eye exam allows us to identify concerns early and help set that child up for a successful year.
Myopia, or nearsightedness, is also becoming more common in children. With more time spent on devices, along with less time outdoors, many children may be at greater risk for developing or worsening myopia. Kids with myopia may see well up close but struggle to see things far away, such as the board, signs, or action on a sports field.
Top 5 Reasons to Schedule Before the Back-to-School Rush:
- Catch Vision Changes Early
Children’s eyes can change quickly, especially during growth years. - Support Reading and Classroom Learning
Clear vision can make it easier to read, focus, follow along, and stay engaged throughout the school day. - Look Beyond Blurry Vision
A pediatric eye exam can help identify concerns like eye teaming, focusing issues, amblyopia, strabismus, double vision, and myopia. - Choose Glasses Kids Will Actually Wear
If your child needs prescription eyewear, scheduling early gives them time to choose frames they feel good in, adjust to wearing glasses, and consider protective or prescription eyewear for sports. - Start the Year with Confidence
When kids see clearly, comfortably, and feel good in their glasses, they can focus more on learning, activities, and friendships instead of struggling with their vision.
Before the school year gets busy, schedule your child’s eye exam with Dr. Kristen Vincent at Simon Eye and help give them the best start possible.
