Beyond the Backpack: When School Feels Harder Than It Should

There is a moment many parents quietly remember.

Homework has taken much longer than expected. You have explained the same question three different ways. Your child is tired. You are tired. Then they look down at the page and say, “I’m just not smart.”

In that moment, the homework no longer matters.

What hurts most is hearing your child believe something about themselves that simply is not true.

During my years working with children and families, I have learned that parents rarely come to see me because of a worksheet. They come because they are watching their child change. The child who once loved stories now avoids reading. The child who easily asked questions now shrugs and says, “I don’t know.” The child who once looked forward to school begins dreading Sunday evenings because Monday means facing another difficult
week.

Almost every conversation begins with the same question: “I know my child is trying, so why does school feel so hard?”

The answer is often more complex than it seems. Learning depends on many skills working together, such as attention, memory, language, organization, executive functioning, emotional regulation, and confidence. When even one of these areas becomes challenging, children may work much harder than anyone realizes simply to keep pace with their classmates.

Adults often see the outcome. Children live the effort.

A parent sees an unfinished worksheet. The child remembers reading the same paragraph five times before it starts to make sense. A teacher notices another forgotten assignment. The child remembers trying to hold several instructions in mind, only to lose them before reaching the desk. Over time, “This is hard” can slowly become “I am not good at
this.”

That is when the concern becomes bigger than grades.

The encouraging news is that children can be supported in many different ways. At Mariani and Associates, our Academic Reinforcement Sessions go beyond traditional tutoring. We help strengthen reading, writing, mathematics, organization, executive functioning, memory strategies, and study skills while giving children something equally important: the opportunity to experience success again.

Sometimes, however, families are left wondering why the struggle continues. Our comprehensive psychoeducational assessments help families identify how a child learns best, highlighting both their strengths and the areas in which they need support. The goal is not simply to provide a diagnosis, but to offer practical recommendations that can be used at home and at school. For many families, finally understanding why school has been so difficult brings a tremendous sense of relief.

Understanding the assessment is often only the beginning. School meetings, accommodations, and Individual Education Plans can feel overwhelming. Our parent consultations help families understand recommendations, prepare for conversations with educators, and feel more confident advocating for their child’s needs.

School struggles rarely stay at school. They often show up at home as anxiety, frustration, low self-esteem, or a child who no longer wants to try because trying has become exhausting. At Mariani and Associates, we provide therapy for children eight years of age and older, helping them develop healthy coping strategies, build resilience, and regain
confidence both inside and outside the classroom.

As another school year begins, trust what you are seeing. If homework has become a nightly struggle, your child has stopped believing in themselves, or school has become a source of anxiety instead of curiosity, those signs are worth paying attention to.

Sometimes, one conversation is all it takes to help a family understand where to begin.

At Mariani and Associates, families can access six areas of support: Academic Reinforcement Sessions, individual therapy for children eight years of age and older, parent consultations, psychoeducational assessments, psychological assessments, and neuropsychological assessments. Each service is designed to meet a different need, but they share the same goal: helping children and families better understand their strengths and challenges, identify practical next steps, and move forward with confidence.

Every child deserves to be understood before they are judged. When children feel seen, supported, and understood, they are better able to learn, grow, and reach their potential. Sometimes, the most important thing a child carries into school is not inside a backpack. It is the belief that they are capable.
