In our last article, “Some Things to Consider in the Education of Children”, we discussed how the diversity in the world today can make the education of our children quite confusing. First, we have the curriculum used and what it emphasizes; whether it is the academics of Math and English, etc., or if it places a much greater emphasis on cultural and philosophical material.
Learning styles need to also be addressed. Is your child a visual learner, an aural learner, or a kinetic (Hands-on) learner? Some curricula tend to rely heavily on one or another of these styles of learning.
Other aspects of the educational process which should be considered are the institution’s philosophy of life, core values and its perspective on faith and religion. Do they correspond well with what you prefer your child to believe?
As parents and guardians in the United States, we have the right and privilege to choose the people and the programs that influence our children. We cannot totally isolate our children from perspectives that we may find to be “undesirable,” nor should we keep them naïve. However, we should protect and guide our children the best we can to ensure they receive a quality education.
Granted, some students will excel in their education no matter what the format is and what the educational model that is being implemented. In reality, some students struggle in their education no matter what format or educational model is used. Most students naturally fall somewhere between these two opposites.

Education is the process of passing on information which the teacher or institution believes to be true. Indoctrination is basically inescapable. Doctrine consists of creeds, principles, and rules. That brings us to the question, “Whose principles and rules of life do we want our children to have?”
A private institution may be a better fit for your student than a public education. Private institutions usually have a primary perspective from which they present educational information. Most likely you will want to choose an education with a Common life view. You may even want to consider Christian schools with a more Conservative world view.
A true Christian Education provides a “Biblical Worldview” as opposed to a “Secular Worldview.” Some private educational institutions advertise that they teach “Morality without Religion.” The question, then must be asked, “Whose morals are being taught, and will they not change as society changes?”
Other aspects you may want to consider are: class size; Is the facility secure; is there a Wholesome environment in the school setting? Is there a caring and loving Administration and faculty?
There is just something special about Christian Teachers mentoring our students in wholesome and godly directions. Of course, it is impossible to create a perfect environment with imperfect people, but efforts can be made to keep our children safe from the corruption of the world.
The education of our children is very important. It could set their course in life. Time and energy spent on finding that optimum educational experience for your loved ones is a profitable investment, paying dividends for years to come.
