Meet the Child Development Specialist Who’s Helping Parents Navigate Big Feelings and Turn Meltdowns Into Moments of Connection

There’s a moment most parents know well. You’re at the playground, or the pediatrician’s office, or sitting at a parent-teacher conference collecting yet another round of cheerful reassurances and somewhere underneath all the nodding and note-taking, a quiet voice is saying: something feels different here. That voice is what brought me into this work over 25 years ago. And it’s what keeps me here.

I’m Cinda Chatfield, a Child Development Specialist and Behavior Expert, and the founder of The Behavior Guru. I live right here in Westlake Village, close enough to the lake that I consider the water part of my daily reset, and I work with parents across the country through my virtual coaching practice, Parenting On Demand. What I do is hard to put in a neat little box, which I’ve come to think of as a feature, not a flaw. I’m not a therapist. I’m not a tutor. I work directly with parents, not children, because in my experience, the most powerful changes in a child’s behavior begin with a shift in how the adults around them understand what they’re seeing. Behavior is communication. Every tantrum, every meltdown, every moment your child seems to be working against you is actually a message. My job is to help you learn to read it.

It wasn’t always from this angle. Earlier in my career I worked directly with children as a Behavior Specialist, embedded inside Regional Center services, school districts, therapeutic agencies, and in-home programs. I’ve  sat on the floor with the child. I’ve been in the classroom, the therapy room, and the living room. That experience shaped everything I do now, because I’ve seen the full picture from both sides. What I discovered over time is that the most lasting change happens when parents are the ones who truly understand what’s driving the behavior. When they have the tools, the clarity, and the confidence, everything shifts. That’s where my focus lives now.

Here in our community, I’ve noticed that parents are more informed than ever and somehow also more second guessed than ever. We have access to more parenting philosophies, more expert opinions, and more screen scrolling rabbit holes than any generation before us. And yet, in all that noise, the most reliable thing a parent has is often the one thing they’ve been quietly talked out of trusting: their own instinct. One of the things I say often is that parenting instinct is data. You have logged more hours observing your specific child than any specialist, teacher, or pediatrician ever will. You know the difference between the cry that signals real distress and the one that’s negotiating screen time. You know the subtle shift in the room before things escalate. That knowledge matters, and my work is built around honoring it while giving it a clearer  framework. I work with parents of toddlers and children who are wondering whether what they’re seeing is typical development or something worth exploring. I work with parents who have been handed the phrase “wait and see” and sent home with a polite smile and a churning stomach. I work with families who are exhausted from quietly reorganizing their entire household around the next potential explosion, and with parents who simply want to feel more confident and less reactive in the moments that matter most.

What Working Together Actually Looks Like…For families here in the LA to Santa Barbara county area, I offer in person support, which means I come to you. I visit your home, meet your family, observe the dynamic firsthand, and work directly with you to assess what’s happening and why. From there, we build individualized, proactive strategies rooted in positive, calming approaches that fit your family and begin shaping behavior from the inside out. There is something powerful about being seen in your own space, and parents often tell me that having someone who truly understands what they’re living with makes all the difference. For families outside the area, or those who prefer the flexibility of virtual support, Parenting On Demand is available via Zoom and phone consultations. And because questions and hard moments don’t always arrive during business hours,  email support is available around the clock for clients who need a little extra guidance between sessions. Full details on how the program works and what it includes can be found at www.BehaviorGuru1.com under Parenting On Demand. What I won’t do in this space is tell you exactly how to handle the thing you’re dealing with, because that’s what a real conversation is for, and every child and every family is genuinely different. What  I will tell you is this: if something has been quietly nagging at you, there is likely a reason. And understanding that reason is almost always the beginning of things getting better.

The work I love most isn’t about labeling children or following rigid scripts. It’s about helping parents move from reactive and overwhelmed to calm, confident, and proactive, so that the atmosphere in your home begins to shift, one small, informed change at a time.

I’m a proud Expert Contributor to this magazine, a member of this community, and someone who still finds this work as meaningful today as the day I started. If you’ve been reading this and feeling like a few of your own questions just got a little louder, I’d love to hear from you.
