When thinking about your future (or maybe your future is now!), have you asked yourself if a senior living community could be right for you? The answer will be different for everyone, and for some people, the answer may be no. But for many people, the answer is yes, and maybe you should do it sooner rather than later! It is a big decision, and it is perfectly normal to have mixed feelings about it. After all, your home holds memories, routines, and independence. Still, it can be worth asking whether your current lifestyle is giving you the freedom, connection, and peace of mind you want for the years ahead.
As the Executive Director at Brightwater, the only continuing care retirement community in Horry County, my Lifestyle Advisors and I talk about this daily with people who come in for information or a tour.
When Senior Living May Not Be Right
If you have thought about moving to a community, ask yourself what is most important to you. If you value your privacy and want several acres all to yourself, or if you don’t want to follow any rules about parking or overnight guests, senior living would not be right for you. It also may not be the right fit if you truly enjoy managing every part of your home, from yardwork and repairs to cooking every meal and handling every household
detail. Some people are happiest staying exactly where they are, and that is okay. The goal is not to convince everyone to move, but to help each person think honestly about what kind of lifestyle will make them feel most comfortable and fulfilled.
When Senior Living May Be a Good Fit
If the idea of a carefree lifestyle appeals to you, senior living may be just what you are looking for! Most communities provide dining options, social and wellness activities, bus trips to attractions, housekeeping, concierge services, maintenance and lawn care. They may pay your utilities and cover property taxes too. This gives you the time to truly enjoy your retirement by spending your days doing what you enjoy most- going to the
beach, hanging out by the pool, playing golf, shopping, playing cards, having a beer in the pub, or just reading a good book from the front porch. You can do as much or as little as you want. You never have to cook, clean or change a lightbulb ever again. Instead, each day can become a new adventure, with old and new friends and a new place to call home. For many residents, the biggest surprise is not what they gave up, but what they gained: more time, more connection, more convenience, and the confidence of knowing support is nearby if they ever need it.
How to Explore Your Options
It is a good idea to speak with trusted friends, family members, and your financial advisor to hear their thoughts. Then, tour several communities, stay for lunch or attend an event, and talk with people who already live there to get their honest feedback. Pay attention to how you feel while you are there. Are people friendly? Do the team
members know residents by name? Can you picture yourself joining an activity, inviting family to visit, or enjoying a meal with neighbors? The more you explore, the easier it becomes to decide whether senior living feels like the right next step for you. And if it does, making the move before you have to can give you the chance to choose the community, floor plan, and lifestyle that truly fit you best.
