When people think of Florida auto insurance, two things come to mind. The first is that we are a no-fault state, and no one is ever at fault for an accident. Many would be shocked to learn this is incorrect.
“No-fault” means that, in the event of an auto accident, your insurance will step up first for your medical bills.
The other is that we have a lot of uninsured drivers here. Now, that is a true statement. As of 2023, at least 20% of drivers in Florida didn’t carry any insurance at all! That’s where one of the most valuable insurance coverages we can offer comes into play: Uninsured Motorist coverage.
This coverage will step up when other drivers don’t. Uninsured Motorist can be selected to match your bodily injury limits of your own insurance policy to help protect you if you find yourself in an automobile accident with an uninsured driver.
Uninsured Motorist coverage comes with two different options. One is the “non-stacked” option, which just provides the basic coverage to all your vehicles on the policy. The other option is the “stacked” option, which will multiply the coverage and stack it on all of your vehicles!
The coverage will stack per vehicle. For example, if you have 10/20 limits and 3 vehicles with stacked UM coverage, you will actually have 30/60 limits for UM!
Another neat perk to “stacked” UM is that it will cover you while you are walking down the sidewalk or riding a bike. It even covers disability, loss of wages, or even pays to retrofit your house in the event you have long-lasting injuries.
Now, I know we said 20% of drivers don’t have insurance at all, and that’s scary enough as it is. There are also drivers out there who are underinsured, meaning they don’t have enough insurance to properly cover the other person if they were to get into an accident with them and find themselves at fault.
Would you believe me if I said it also covers that too? Well, you will be happy to hear that it, in fact, does!
When you get into an accident and the other driver’s limits don’t quite cover it, you can use your UM coverage to step in and pick up where they couldn’t.
At the end of the day, it’s always better to have peace of mind that, if the worst happens, you are prepared.
