Every child deserves someone who sees not just where they are today, but where they could be tomorrow.
That’s a belief I understand personally.
Growing up in a military family meant moving from school to school, always trying to catch up and fit in. By third grade I was struggling academically, especially with phonics. It wasn’t until a caring tutor worked with me, and doctors discovered I had a hearing problem that was later corrected through surgery, that everything began to make sense. Suddenly I wasn’t “the kid who couldn’t learn.” I simply needed someone to understand how I learned.
That experience changed my life.
Although reading came later, I fell in love with math and science, eventually earning a degree in Physics and Astronomy. Ironically, I even became an honors English student. The lesson stayed with me: a child’s potential should never be measured by where they happen to be today.
After teaching at a private school on Fleming Island, I began tutoring at Huntington Learning Center during COVID. I loved the one-on-one conversations, the breakthroughs, and the joy of watching students discover they were capable of more than they believed. I later became the center’s director, and when the previous owner decided to retire, I was given an unexpected opportunity to purchase the center. It was an easy decision because this community had already become home.
Today, as a local Fleming Island resident, my mission is simple: be the person families can turn to when a child is struggling, or when a high-achieving student simply isn’t being challenged enough.
One student still gives me goosebumps.
After moving here from another state, she found herself far behind her classmates because her previous school simply hadn’t covered the same material. She cried every morning and developed stomach aches because she dreaded going to school. At Huntington, we built a learning plan designed specifically for her—not a cookie-cutter program, but one created around her strengths and needs. She never missed a session. Week after week her confidence grew. Before long she wasn’t just passing her standardized tests, she was scoring at the top of her class. Even more rewarding, she walked into school each day believing in herself again.
That’s the real success story.
For more than 50 years, Huntington has developed an extraordinary collection of teaching methods and resources.
