Your Home Has 300,000 Items.

Let that sink in. The average American home contains about 300,000 items. According to the National Association of Productivity and Organizing Professionals (NAPO), 80% of what we have is rarely or never used. We wear just 20% of our clothes. We play with 20% of our toys. We cook with 20% of our kitchen tools. The other 80%? It just sits there. It takes up space and energy. It also raises your stress levels.

If you still need convincing that clutter affects you, think about this: Americans collectively spend 2.5 days every year searching for misplaced items. They spend $2.7 billion annually replacing things they can’t find. The self-storage industry in the United States is now bigger than Hollywood. There are more self-storage facilities than McDonald’s, Starbucks, and Subway locations combined. We are drowning in our stuff.

Here’s where it gets really interesting. In Feng Shui—an ancient Chinese practice for arranging spaces to optimize energy flow and boost peace of mind, clutter isn’t just a physical problem. It’s also an energetic one. Stagnant objects create stagnant energy. A pile of things you’ve been meaning to deal with for six months isn’t just an eyesore. It’s an energetic anchor. It holds you in a state of incompletion.

Every unfinished pile and every item stored in the basement for “when you’ll need it” has an impact. Every overstuffed drawer and every item you keep out of guilt rather than love—your nervous system registers all of it. This leads to a constant, consistent level of stress. You’ve probably stopped noticing the stress because it’s always there. Yet it still makes you feel like you’re caught in quicksand. It may be conscious awareness, or a whisper from your subconscious mind.  Either way, it is disrupting contentment and forward motion.

Research backs this up. Studies show that people living in cluttered environments have higher cortisol levels throughout the day. Cluttered bedrooms are linked to poor sleep. Cluttered offices are linked to procrastination.

Here’s what most people get wrong about organizing: they think there’s only one right system. Many have read books, watched shows, or seen perfectly labeled pantries on Instagram. They decide that if they can’t do it that way, they can’t do it at all. That’s not true. It’s one of the biggest myths in this industry. Every brain works differently. Every household operates differently. What works for one person may create chaos for another. My job isn’t to impose a system on you. It’s about understanding how you actually live and building something that works for your reality.

The best part? De-cluttering eliminates 40% of the average home’s housework.  Organizing isn’t just the beginning… It’s how you buy back your time.
