Last month I shared how Alaska completely changed my expectations with its incredible wildlife, glaciers, and historic town of Skagway. But the journey was far from over.
Juneau, Alaska’s capital city, offers a fascinating combination of civilization and wilderness. Accessible only by air or water, Juneau feels wonderfully remote while still providing charming shops, restaurants, and local culture. Riding the Mount Roberts Tramway rewarded us with breathtaking panoramic views of the harbor, mountains, and surrounding forests.
Our next stop, Ketchikan, was equally memorable. Its colorful waterfront, rich Alaska Native heritage, and lush evergreen forests make it one of the most picturesque ports in Southeast Alaska. One of the highlights was visiting the fish ladder, where we watched determined salmon fight their way upstream to spawn. Nature has a way of reminding us just how remarkable life can be.
One thing I would do differently next time is add a land tour before boarding the cruise.
I now understand why so many experienced Alaska travelers recommend combining a cruise with several days inland. My next adventure will include Fairbanks, Denali National Park, the Mount McKinley area, and Anchorage before sailing south. Traveling by rail through Alaska’s interior offers opportunities to see bears, moose, caribou, Dall sheep, wolves, and countless bird species in their natural environment.
Of course, wildlife doesn’t follow a schedule. Apparently no one has explained customer service to the animals! But the anticipation of what might appear around the next bend is part of what makes Alaska so exciting.
Whether you’re celebrating a birthday, anniversary, retirement, graduation, or simply checking off a bucket-list destination, Alaska offers an experience unlike anywhere else. The primary cruise season runs from May through September, so planning ahead is important.
If I can offer two pieces of advice, they would be these: book a balcony cabin because Alaska’s spectacular scenery deserves to be enjoyed every minute, and choose excursions that take you beyond the ports. That’s where you’ll discover the incredible people, wildlife, scenery, and stories that make Alaska unforgettable.
Alaska wasn’t a destination I dreamed about. Instead, it became something even better—a wonderful surprise that left me wanting to return before I had even unpacked my suitcase.
Alaska is calling. Perhaps it’s time for you to answer the call.
