Everyone knows someone who has multiple food allergies and sensitivities alongside mystery health conditions that go undiagnosed or unexplained by physicians and specialists alike. Maybe that somebody is you. Diagnostic testing is often inconclusive at best, and “normal” lab results leave people feeling unseen, unheard, and going crazy without validation as to why they feel the way they do.
This lack of answers is turning consumers into investigators. We’re taking closer looks at our food labels more and more every single day. We’re asking questions like, “Could it really be what I’m eating?” “What are these companies feeding us?” “What is maltodextrin made from?” and “What is guar gum, and why has it been added to my coconut milk?” I know it can seem overwhelming and confusing, but every time you turn a packaged food over to read the ingredients, you’re taking back a piece of your health that the modern food system has tried to influence.
The traditional (and ever-changing) food pyramid, the fad eating plans, the weight loss drugs, and the “buy-my-book” era need to end if you want your energy, health, and sanity back. The idea that you can stroll carefree through grocery store aisles, pop boxed and bagged shelf-stable items into your cart, and continue to live with abundant health is a road that often leads nowhere—except for circling right back to a physician who’s going to look at your labs and tell you everything is fine. Meanwhile, your joints cry out in agony and your digestive system can’t decide if it wants to shut down or blow up.
Real health comes with responsibility, and that responsibility belongs to no one but you. Throw away the confusing plans, subscriptions, and apps, and start with this one, simple step: Eat. Real. Food. If nature made it, eat it. If man made it in a lab, toss it. If it makes you feel sick, don’t eat it. If you aren’t familiar with the ingredients, toss it. Begin there. Commit to it, and see where that leads you.
I give all of my Nutrition and Herbal Counseling clients this same starting point as we work together to find the root cause of their symptoms. Of course, we discuss dietary eliminations and emphasize certain foods and herbs depending on what their individual root issues might need, but for the most part, Real Food is the answer to living a healthy and abundant life.
With a Functional Real Food stance in mind, this is the exact philosophy we use to stock foods at The Station. We are mindful and careful to carry products that I, as a Holistic Nutritionist, would confidently serve on the table in my own home. Our store exists to live alongside our community, and we want to help by offering what we consider to be the best quality available.
So, start there in your kitchen with Real Food from the earth. If you need further guidance, explanations, or you want someone to walk you through Functional Holistic Nutrition and Herbalism to get to the root of your symptoms, I’m here for that, too. Sometimes, there are pathogens blocking the way for Real Food to do its job in our bodies, and I’m happy to sit down with you and walk through those possibilities.
Until next time, happy Real Food hunting, friends!
