Football season is in full swing, which means weekends are for tailgating, cheering on your favorite team, and enjoying the cooler weather. But while you’re focused on the gridiron, what kind of game is playing out under your dock?

For Lake Oconee and Lake Sinclair homeowners, the fall off-season is the perfect time to review your waterfront playbook. We often think of our shorelines as static, but they are constantly changing ecosystems. Right now, you might be facing two major unseen opponents: silent silt buildup and hidden underwater stumps.

Are You Losing Yardage to Silt?

Sediment buildup is the ultimate defensive line against your boat. Over a 5-to-7-year period, natural runoff and changing currents deposit heavy mud along your shoreline, slowly shrinking your water depth. You might not notice it day-to-day, but here are a few red flags that you are losing the battle for depth:

  • The Lift Struggle: Your boat lift grinds or struggles to lower completely without hitting soft mud.
  • Propeller Wash: You notice dark, muddy clouds kicking up behind your boat even when idling into your slip.
  • The Sinking Feeling: Wading near your dock feels less like a firm lakebed and more like stepping into quicksand.

Avoiding the Blindside Hit

While silt slows you down, submerged stumps are the unexpected blitz that can ruin a season. When our local lakes were created, thousands of trees were left behind. Over time, constant wave action and feeding fish wear these submerged logs into sharp spears just beneath the surface. As lake levels fluctuate in the fall and winter, these invisible hazards become a major threat to your hull, your lower units, and your family’s safety.

Calling an Audible for Your Shoreline

The best defense is a good offense. Today, specialized floating equipment can vacuum away silt and cut dangerous stumps right from the water’s surface, leaving your lawn and landscaping completely untouched.

This fall, while you are watching the game, take a halftime walk down to the water. Assessing your depth and scanning for hazards now ensures your dock is ready for a championship season next spring!
