Is This All There Is to Life? 

Every once in a while, almost everyone asks a question like this:

“Is this all there is to life?” 

I’ve asked it more than once. 

Sometimes it came during the ordinary moments of life—waiting in the endless school pickup  line for my daughters or spending an entire Saturday at a swim meet with hundreds of other  parents. Covered in sunscreen, surrounded by a sea of colorful swim caps, we all waited for a  race that lasted less than thirty seconds. Looking back, those days are some of my favorite  memories. At the time, however, they often felt as though they would never end. 

Other times, the question surfaced during life’s harder seasons: the strain of financial uncertainty,  the heartbreak of losing someone I loved far too soon, or the realization that life seems to move  faster with every passing year. 

The older I get, the more I find myself wondering, “Where did the time go?” 

In the movie Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Ferris famously says, “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t  stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.” It’s a line that has stayed with people  for decades because, deep down, we know it’s true. 

But slowing down only raises bigger questions. 

• What gives life meaning? 
• Is there more to life than getting through another week? 
• Can faith still make sense in a world that feels so divided? 
• Does God exist—and if He does, does He really care about me? 
• Can prayer actually make a difference? 
• How can I make the most of whatever years I have left? 

If you’ve ever asked questions like these, you’re in good company. Every one of us has wrestled  with them at some point. 

Unfortunately, many people assume church is the last place they can ask honest questions.  They’re afraid they’ll be judged, pressured, or expected to have all the answers before they walk  through the door. 

Alpha is different. 

Alpha was created for people who are curious, skeptical, searching, returning to faith, or simply  wondering if there might be more to life than what they’ve experienced so far.

Each gathering begins with a relaxed lunch, followed by a short, engaging video that explores  one of life’s biggest questions. After that, people gather around tables for conversation. No one is  required to speak. No question is off limits. No one will pressure you or argue with you. We  simply listen, learn from one another, and explore together. 

Our first Alpha gathering will be Thursday, October 22, from 12:00–1:30 p.m. at Church of  Our Saviour (4416 Betsy Kerrison Parkway, Johns Island). 

There is no cost to attend, and there is absolutely no obligation to come back after the first  session. Consider it an opportunity to simply come and see. 

Whether you’ve never believed, once believed but drifted away, or are simply looking to  reconnect with God after many years, there is a seat at the table for you. 

The Bible says, “Taste and see that the Lord is good” (Psalm 34:8). Notice the invitation. It  doesn’t begin with “agree,” “perform,” or “have it all figured out.” It begins with come and see. 

So, if you’ve ever wondered, “Is this all there is to life?” perhaps it’s worth spending ninety  minutes exploring another possibility.
