September means many of our winter residents are returning to Anthem, the golf courses are getting busier, and golf carts are making their way back onto neighborhood streets. After sitting unused for several months, your cart may need some attention before that first round of golf. Arizona’s summer heat can affect batteries, tires, electrical connections, fluids, and other important components, even when the cart has been stored indoors.
Start with a quick walk-around inspection. Look for anything loose, cracked, leaking, or out of place. Check the seats, roof, windshield, mirrors, and accessories, and clear away any dust or debris that collected during storage. For electric carts, the battery should be one of the first things you check. Lead-acid batteries may need distilled water and should be inspected for corrosion, loose terminals, or damaged cables. Lithium batteries require less maintenance, but the charger, connections, and overall charge level should still be checked. Do not assume the cart is ready just because the lights come on. A weak battery may appear fine at first and then lose power once the cart is under load.
Next, inspect the tires. Golf cart tires can lose air while sitting, so check the pressure in all four tires and look for cracking, dry rot, flat spots, or uneven wear. Proper tire pressure helps with steering, handling, and battery range. Before driving through the neighborhood or onto the course, test the brakes and steering in a safe, open area. Listen for grinding or squeaking and pay attention to anything that feels different. Make sure the parking brake works properly, too.
Gas-powered carts need many of the same checks, along with an inspection of the fuel, oil, belts, hoses, filters, and starting system. If the cart is difficult to start, idles roughly, or has lost power, it may be time for a seasonal tune-up.
Finally, test the headlights, brake lights, turn signals, horn, mirrors, charging ports, and installed accessories. Make sure storage baskets, coolers, golf bag attachments, and seat belts are secure.
A professional seasonal inspection can catch small problems before they become expensive repairs or leave you stranded.
