This traditional home has beautiful architectural details that deserve to be seen, not obscured by the window coverings. For this room, we looked at three diverse ways to dress the same window, each providing light control and blackout when needed, while preserving the character of the room.
1. Drapes Only
This room was designed for a baby girl who arrives later this year, so blackout lining is necessary for naps and nighttime.

Blackout-lined drapes are a beautiful solution. The soft pink fabric is sweet enough for a little girl’s room, while the tailored, full-length treatment gives it a sophistication that won’t feel juvenile as she grows. It’s a look that can easily take her from nursery to teenager — and beyond.
2. Fabric Roman Shade + Hidden Blackout Shade
A classic fabric Roman shade offers a cleaner, more tailored approach while still complementing the traditional architecture.

The decorative Roman shade can be constructed with a translucent privacy lining, allowing soft natural light into the room during the day. A separate blackout shade, hidden behind the Roman, can then be lowered for naps and nighttime.
The result is a simple, elegant window treatment with two levels of light control.
3. Sheer Grass Roman Shade + Drapes
For the most layered look, we combined blackout drapes with a sheer, handwoven natural grass Roman shade.

During the day, the woven shade filters the sunlight while adding warmth and beautiful natural texture. At bedtime, the blackout drapes can be closed to darken the room.
The additional layer of texture elevates the entire design without competing with the room’s architectural details. And because neither treatment feels overly youthful, this sophisticated combination can easily evolve with the room as this little girl grows up.
