When most people hear the word luxury, they often think about the latest products with the newest technology, the best quality and higher price tags. That is certainly true for the residential interior design industry. Every item in a home has high-end options to choose from. But is that the only meaning of luxury? Can a home be designed on a lower budget and still feel like a luxury home? In this busy and chaotic world, true luxury could simply be about having a place for respite and solitude in everyday life. Luxurious living can apply to homes that are designed to be peaceful, organized and restful – places to slow down and escape the chaos.

Intentional choices of materials, details and colors can create environments with these qualities. A current style trend is called ‘Organic Modern’. The concept brings organic elements into clean, modern design. Instead of cold and sleek, think warm and natural. In Evergreen a mountain component is added to this style of design. Organic Modern fits right in with this perception of luxury. Organic elements brought into a house can foster a connection to the natural world. Thoughtful design details can add simplicity to our lives. Smart, functional planning can reduce stress. And selecting finishes that create balance in colors and textures can evoke feelings of peace. None of those thoughtful additions to a project require a large budget, but all can make a home feel like a comfortable retreat. With the right approach, a home does not need to cost an exorbitant amount of money to be luxurious.

The artist Mary Jo Hoffman just released a book entitled Still, The Art of Noticing and it embodies this concept. Every day for twelve years, Mary collected items from her natural surroundings and then photographed them in various patterns. The powerful simplicity of taking time to notice her surroundings and document them has gained national attention. Her photographs have been adopted by wallpaper and fabric companies and now can be enjoyed in anyone’s home. Products like these can serve as inspirational daily reminders to slow down, pay attention to the beauty around us and even to practice mindfulness.

The job of an interior designer is to bring beauty and functionality into everyday life. One goal is to create spaces where one can escape the chaos of the world. We are fortunate to live in Evergreen and be surrounded by natural beauty even in the simple task of driving to the grocery store. If our homes reflect our environment then we can truly be living in natural luxury.

Luxury does not necessarily have to be about high-end products or price tags. It can be about a feeling of calm, function and simplicity. A good designer helps clients create a place for respite, a sense of belonging and a feeling of home.
