Building or remodeling a home is one of the most exciting journeys you’ll ever take—but it can also be one of the most overwhelming. Every day brings another decision. Cabinet colors. Flooring. Countertops. Lighting. Plumbing fixtures. Hardware. Paint. Before long, you’re scrolling through Pinterest, saving Instagram posts, and wondering, “Will I still love this in 10 years?”
My answer is usually another question: Are you designing for today, or for the way you want to live for the next twenty years?
As a designer, I never begin a project by asking what’s popular. I begin by asking how you want your home to feel and how you want it to function. When clients ask me whether a design choice will stand the test of time, I encourage them to consider three simple principles.
First, invest in what is hardest to change. Cabinetry, flooring, windows, architectural features, quality woodwork, and your home’s overall layout should be chosen with longevity in mind. These elements form the foundation of your home, and they’re also the most expensive and disruptive to replace. Timeless materials like natural stone and white oak don’t just endure—they develop a beautiful patina that tells the story of a well-loved home. Coupled with thoughtful craftsmanship and balanced proportions, they create a home that feels richer as the years pass.
Second, let trends live where they’re easy to change. Paint colors, light fixtures, wallpaper, artwork, rugs, pillows, and accessories are wonderful places to express your personality and embrace current styles. They can refresh a room without requiring a complete renovation every few years.
Finally, design for the life you actually live—not the one you see on social media. A beautiful home isn’t defined by what’s getting the most likes online. It’s the one that works effortlessly for your family. Maybe that’s a kitchen designed for gathering, a quiet reading nook with Hill Country views, or a spacious mudroom that keeps everyday life organized. The most successful homes reflect the people who live in them, not the latest trend.
The homes that stand the test of time rarely chase trends. They feel authentic because every decision was made with intention rather than impulse.
Years from now, I don’t want you to walk through your front door and think, “That was so last year.” I want you to feel the same sense of comfort, joy, and peace that you felt the day you moved in.
