What Should Dog Owners Focus on This September?

As summer winds down and routines begin to settle back into place, September is a great time to give your dog’s overall health a little extra attention. Whether you’ve spent the last few months hiking, camping, swimming or simply enjoying longer walks together, this seasonal transition is the perfect opportunity for a wellness reset.

One of the first things I recommend is taking a close look at your dog’s coat and skin. Summer can leave behind dry skin, excess shedding, tangled fur and hidden hot spots, especially in dogs with thicker coats. Regular grooming isn’t just about looking good. It allows us to spot small issues before they become larger health concerns while helping your dog’s coat stay healthy as cooler weather approaches.

Nutrition is another area worth revisiting. Many dogs are more active during the summer months, and as activity levels begin to change in the fall, it’s a good time to evaluate whether their current diet is still meeting their needs. A balanced diet, quality ingredients and appropriate supplements can make a noticeable difference in energy levels, digestion and coat condition. Every dog is unique, so there isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach.

September is also an ideal time to check collars, harnesses and leashes for wear. Dogs can gain or lose weight over the summer, and equipment that no longer fits properly can become uncomfortable or even unsafe. Ensuring everything fits correctly makes daily walks safer and more enjoyable for both you and your dog.

Finally, don’t overlook preventative care. Nail trims, ear cleaning and routine grooming appointments all contribute to your dog’s comfort and overall health. Small maintenance tasks performed consistently often help prevent more significant problems later.

At Atomic Dog Boutique, Beastro & Grooming, we’ve always believed that caring for your dog goes beyond a bath or a haircut. From personalized grooming services and healthy nutrition to handcrafted products designed for everyday adventures, our goal is to help dogs live happier, healthier lives.

After all, our dogs give us their unconditional love every day. Taking a little extra time this September to care for their health is one of the best ways we can return the favour.
