Beyond the Locket: Modern Ways to Carry Family With You

Family jewellery has long been associated with lockets, engraved pendants and pieces passed from one generation to the next. While those traditions still have their place, there are now countless ways to create jewellery that represents the people who matter most while still feeling personal, contemporary and wearable.

The key is to think beyond a single symbol of family and consider what makes your family yours.

One Piece, Many Stories

Birthstones are a natural place to start. A ring can incorporate the birthstones of children or grandchildren, either as prominent features or subtle accents within the design. For larger families, different stones can be arranged together in a way that feels intentional rather than resembling a traditional “family ring.”

Stacking bands offer another approach. Instead of placing everyone into one piece, each band can represent a child, grandchild, partner or significant chapter in the family. The collection can also grow as the family does.

A Family Connection Without Matching Exactly

Family jewellery doesn’t have to mean everyone wears the same thing.

Siblings living in different cities might choose pieces that share a gemstone, engraving or small design detail. Parents and adult children could incorporate the same motif into completely different styles of jewellery. One person might wear a pendant while another chooses a ring or bracelet.

The connection is there, even when the pieces aren’t identical.

Make Your Family History Part of the Design

Signet rings also offer plenty of room for personalization. A family crest, initials, meaningful date or custom symbol can transform a traditional design into something specific to your family’s story.

Existing family jewellery can also become part of something new. Stones from an inherited piece may be incorporated into a contemporary design or elements of an older piece can inspire something created for the next generation. Rather than leaving meaningful jewellery tucked away because it doesn’t suit your style, redesigning it can give that history another chapter.

There isn’t one correct way to create family jewellery. The best pieces aren’t meaningful because they follow a particular tradition. They’re meaningful because the details were chosen specifically for the people and stories behind them.
