Winter-Ready: What to Check Before Calgary’s Cold Really Sets In

In Calgary, winter rarely arrives politely. One week can feel like fall and the next can bring icy roads, freezing temperatures and a vehicle that suddenly isn’t as happy to start in the morning.

That’s why preparing your vehicle before winter is about more than switching over your tires. A few preventative checks can help you avoid inconvenient surprises once temperatures drop.

Start with your tires.

Winter tires provide better traction in cold, snowy and icy conditions, but simply having them installed isn’t enough. Check the tread condition and tire pressure regularly. As temperatures fall, tire pressure can drop too, which can affect handling, braking and overall performance.

Don’t overlook your battery.

Cold weather is particularly demanding on vehicle batteries. A battery that seemed perfectly healthy through summer may struggle when the temperature plunges. Having its condition tested before the coldest weather arrives can give you an indication of whether it’s ready for another Alberta winter.

Check your brakes and fluids.

Your brakes need to perform reliably when roads become slippery, while fluids such as coolant, engine oil and winter-rated windshield washer fluid all play important roles when temperatures fall.

Visibility matters too.

Inspect your windshield wipers, exterior lights, heater and defrost system before you truly need them. Being able to clear your windshield quickly during snow, frost and changing road conditions is an important part of safe winter driving.

Finally, think beyond what’s under the hood. Alberta winters expose vehicles to moisture, grime and road treatments throughout the season. Regular cleaning, particularly around areas where debris accumulates, can help protect your vehicle’s finish and underbody over the long term.

The best winter maintenance is preventative. Rather than waiting for the first extremely cold morning to discover a weak battery, worn wipers or another issue, give your vehicle a thorough seasonal check while the weather is still cooperating.

A little preparation now can mean fewer surprises and a lot more confidence when Calgary winter inevitably makes its entrance.
