October is more than a month filled with pink ribbons. Breast Cancer Awareness Month is an opportunity for all of us to pause, educate ourselves, support our neighbors, and remind the people we care about to prioritize their health.
As REALTORS®, we have a unique role in our communities. We don’t simply help people buy and sell houses. We build relationships, connect people with resources, support local businesses, participate in community events, and often become trusted members of the neighborhoods we serve.
That means our responsibility can extend beyond the closing table.
Real Estate Is Really About People
A house is a physical structure, but a community is built through people.
Every day, REALTORS® interact with families, homeowners, renters, business owners, community leaders, neighbors, and other professionals. Over time, those relationships become something much more meaningful than a transaction.
We celebrate when a first-time buyer receives the keys to their first home. We help families find a place where children can grow. We help those ready to downsize and move to their retirement home and community. We help people transition into a new chapter of life.
And because we are connected to so many people, we also have an opportunity to use our platforms to highlight causes that affect our communities.
Breast cancer is one of those causes.
Why Awareness Matters
Breast cancer screening can help detect cancer earlier, when treatment may be more effective. Current guidance from the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends that women ages 40 to 74 receive screening mammography every other year. However, screening recommendations can differ based on individual risk factors and circumstances, so people should talk with their healthcare professional about what is appropriate for them.
This is why awareness matters.
A simple conversation with a friend, client, coworker, neighbor, or family member could encourage someone to schedule an appointment they’ve been postponing.
We don’t have to be healthcare professionals to encourage people to take their health seriously.
We simply need to start the conversation.
REALTORS® and the Power of Community
One of the most rewarding parts of being a REALTOR® is being part of a community.
Our businesses are built on relationships. We work with local lenders, attorneys, inspectors, contractors, title professionals, insurance agents, photographers, business owners, nonprofit organizations, and countless other people.
That network gives REALTORS® a powerful platform.
Imagine what can happen when that same network comes together around a cause.
A REALTOR® can:
- Share educational information about breast cancer awareness.
- Encourage friends and clients to speak with their healthcare providers about appropriate screening.
- Participate in or promote local breast cancer walks, fundraisers, and community events.
- Support local businesses and organizations raising money for breast cancer research and patient support.
- Recognize and celebrate breast cancer survivors.
- Offer encouragement to families currently navigating treatment.
- Use social media to spread reliable information rather than misinformation.
- Create opportunities for clients, colleagues, and neighbors to come together in support of the cause.
These actions may seem small individually, but strong communities are created through small acts of support repeated by many people.
From Closing Tables to Community Connections
A REALTOR® may meet a client because they want to sell a home. But the relationship doesn’t necessarily end when the paperwork is signed.
Your clients become neighbors.
They become parents at the same school. They shop at local businesses. They volunteer in the same community. They attend the same events. They may eventually become friends.
That’s why community involvement is such a natural extension of real estate.
When REALTORS® support causes that matter to their communities, we’re demonstrating something important: we aren’t just invested in property values—we’re invested in the people who give those properties meaning.
Supporting Survivors: Celebrate Strength
Breast Cancer Awareness Month should also be about celebrating the people who have faced breast cancer.
Survivors remind us of resilience, courage, perseverance, and the importance of having a support system.
For someone going through treatment, knowing that friends, family members, coworkers, neighbors, and their community are standing beside them can make a meaningful difference.
As REALTORS®, we can help create that culture of support.
Sometimes support looks like donating.
Sometimes it looks like attending an event.
Sometimes it means sharing a resource.
And sometimes it’s simply saying:
“We are here for you.”
Building Communities That Care
Real estate professionals often talk about location, location, location.
But a truly great location isn’t just about the house.
It’s about the people.
It’s about whether neighbors look out for one another. It’s about whether local businesses thrive. It’s about whether families feel connected. It’s about whether people come together when someone needs help.
That’s the kind of community REALTORS® have the opportunity to help build.
This October, let’s use our voices and our businesses to do more than promote homes.
Let’s promote awareness, compassion, connection, and community.
Let’s support survivors.
Let’s stand with families.
Let’s support organizations doing meaningful work.
And most importantly, let’s continue building communities where people know they don’t have to face difficult moments alone.
Together, We Build More Than Homes
And let’s continue doing what REALTORS® do best: bringing people together and helping build communities where people can thrive.
Sending Smiles….
