Healthy smiles start with healthy habits – and it’s never too early to begin. Parents play an important role in helping children develop good oral hygiene routines that will follow them into adulthood.

Start early. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) recommends establishing a dental home by a child’s first birthday or within six months of the first tooth appearing. Before teeth erupt, parents should gently wipe their baby’s gums with a clean, damp cloth. Once the first tooth appears, you can begin brushing twice daily with a soft-bristled, age-appropriate toothbrush and a smear (the size of a grain of rice) of fluoride toothpaste.

Make brushing a routine. Young children typically need help brushing thoroughly and effectively. Parents should brush or assist with brushing until the child has coordination to do so on their own. It is recommended to help until around 7-8 years old. Make brushing a part of the morning and bedtime routine to create healthy habits and let them choose a fun toothbrush or listen to a favorite song (around ~2 minutes long) while brushing.

Don’t forget between the teeth. If there are two teeth touching, daily use of floss to remove plaque is important to cleanse areas that a toothbrush cannot reach.

Lead by example. Children learn by watching their parents. By brushing together, it can make oral hygiene feel like a normal and enjoyable part of their day.

Regular dental visits, starting early in life, allow your pediatric dentist to monitor growth and development, assess cavity risk, provide preventive care, and answer your questions along the way. Just as importantly, early and consistent visits help children become familiar and comfortable with the dental office, building confidence and a trusting relationship with their dental team. With this positive foundation, future dental experiences can feel more comfortable and reassuring, supporting your child’s overall well-being.
