Sometimes it’s the smallest gesture that means the most.
A favourite song playing softly in the background. A table displaying treasured family photos. A bowl filled with a loved one’s favourite candy. Small details like these may seem simple, but they often become the moments families remember long after a service ends.
When people think about funeral services, they often picture a traditional ceremony. While those traditions continue to be important for many families, today’s funerals and celebrations of life are increasingly shaped by the unique personalities, passions, and stories of the individuals being honoured.
This shift toward personalization was something our team recently discussed during a feature on CHCH Morning Live, where we explored how funeral services continue to evolve to better reflect the lives they celebrate.
One of the most meaningful aspects of planning a service is finding ways to tell someone’s story.
For one person, that might mean displaying a treasured collection. For another, it could be incorporating favourite recipes into a reception, highlighting a lifelong hobby, or inviting guests to share memories and stories.
We’ve even seen a family bring a John Deere tractor to the funeral home to honour a lifelong connection to farming and the land. It’s often these personal touches that help create the most meaningful tributes.
What many families discover is that there is no single “right way” to honour a life.
Services today can be traditional or contemporary, formal or informal, large or intimate. The most meaningful tributes are often the ones that reflect who that person truly was.
As funeral professionals, our role is not to tell families what a service should look like. Rather, it is to listen, guide, and help create an experience that feels authentic to their loved one.
Every family arrives with a different story, and every service should honour that story in its own unique way.
After all, people may not remember every detail of a service, but they will remember how it made them feel, the stories that were shared, and the moments that brought a loved one’s personality to life.
Because every life is unique, every tribute should be too.
