Fall Festivals and Football: Is Your Car Ready to Ride?

As the Charleston area finally gets a break from the intense summer heat, fall brings plenty of reasons to hit the road: football weekends and fall festivals, pumpkin patches and cool weather getaways.

But after months of Lowcountry heat, your vehicle may need a little attention, too. High temperatures can take a toll on several critical components, so a quick seasonal checkup now can help keep your fall plans from turning into roadside headaches later.

Battery

Before you head out for your next fall adventure, take a quick look under the hood. Make sure your battery is securely mounted, and the connections are clean and tight. If you notice white or blue powdery buildup around the terminals, corrosion may need to be cleaned away.

If your battery is more than three years old, consider having it tested. Summer heat is especially tough on batteries, and a weakened battery can become much more noticeable once temperatures begin to drop. A quick test now could save you from a car that won’t start later.

Tires and Brakes

As temperatures cool, tire pressure naturally drops, making fall a good time to check all four tires. Proper inflation becomes even more important when you’re dealing with wet leaves, rainy roads, and other slippery conditions.

While you’re at it, check your tread depth and look for cracking, damage, or uneven wear. Worn or improperly inflated tires can reduce traction and increase stopping distance.

Your brakes deserve some attention, too. If you’ve noticed decreased stopping power, unusual noises, vibration, or anything that simply doesn’t feel right when braking, have them inspected. It’s always better to catch worn brake pads or other issues before they become bigger, more expensive problems.

Visibility and Fluids

Months of blazing sun and UV exposure can be tough on windshield wipers. If your blades are cracked, skipping, squeaking, or leaving streaks behind, replace them before fall rain puts them to the test.

This is also a great time to check your essential fluids, including engine oil, coolant, and windshield washer fluid. Keeping up with these basics is one of the easiest ways to help your vehicle perform reliably throughout the season.

Air Quality and Climate

When the air outside finally turns fresh and crisp, the last thing you want is stale, dusty air inside your vehicle.

Over time, dust, debris, pollen, and other contaminants collect in both your engine and cabin air filters. A dirty engine air filter can restrict airflow and potentially affect performance, while a clogged cabin filter can reduce airflow through your climate system and leave the interior feeling and smelling less than fresh.

Checking and replacing these filters when needed is a simple way to help your vehicle breathe a little easier this fall.

A Little Preparation Goes a Long Way

Fall in the Lowcountry is too good to spend it waiting for a tow truck. A few simple checks after a long, hot Charleston summer can help keep your vehicle safe, reliable, and ready for wherever the season takes you.

Whether it’s a Saturday tailgate, a trip to the pumpkin patch, or a weekend on the road, take a few minutes to make sure your car is just as ready for fall as you are.
