There’s something special about fall in Minnesota. The leaves are changing, the air is getting crisp, and before we know it, we’ll be spending a whole lot more time at home. October is the perfect time to take a look around and ask: Is your home ready for what’s ahead—and is it working the way you want it to?
Your home does a lot more than provide a place to live. It keeps your family warm, dry, and protected from everything Minnesota weather sends our way. From summer storms and heavy rain to freezing temperatures, snow, and ice, your home is where life happens.

With winter coming, maybe it’s time to finish that basement and create the perfect space for the kids and their friends, holiday entertaining, or a cozy family movie spot. Feeling like your home is running out of room? Let’s get that garage addition on the books.

Before the Snow Flies—Is Your Home Ready?
October is the perfect time to give your home a quick once-over before another Minnesota winter arrives. A little attention now can help you catch potential problems before snow, ice, and freezing temperatures make them bigger ones.
Here’s a simple fall checklist to help get your home winter-ready:
Start at the Top
Your roof is your home’s first line of defense against the elements. Missing, cracked, curled, or damaged shingles can leave your home vulnerable to moisture, especially once snow and ice begin to accumulate.
Take a look from the ground for anything that appears damaged or out of place. If something doesn’t look right, give us a call. It’s always better to address a potential problem before Minnesota winter weather puts your roof to the test.
Give Your Gutters Some Attention
Falling leaves are beautiful on the trees—not so much when they’re filling your gutters. Leaves, twigs, and other debris can prevent water from draining properly. Make sure your gutters and downspouts are clear and that water is being directed away from your home. Proper drainage becomes especially important as temperatures begin moving above and below freezing.
Check Your Siding
Siding plays an important role in protecting your home from wind, moisture, and cold. Take a walk around your property and look for loose, cracked, warped, or missing siding. Pay particular attention to areas around windows, doors, and corners.
Small openings can allow moisture to get behind your siding, where damage may go unnoticed. Catching these issues early can make repairs simpler and help keep your home protected throughout the winter.

Look for Gaps Around Windows and Doors
Those cool October breezes are great when you’re outside enjoying the fall weather. They’re not so great when you can feel them coming through your windows and doors.
Check caulking and weatherstripping for cracks, gaps, or deterioration. Sealing obvious air leaks can make your home more comfortable while helping improve energy efficiency during Minnesota’s coldest months.
Don’t Ignore the Small Warning Signs
A water stain on the ceiling, a loose shingle in the yard, damaged siding, or an overflowing gutter may not seem urgent right now. But once freezing temperatures, snow, and ice arrive, small problems can quickly become bigger ones.
If something doesn’t look right, it’s worth checking out while the fall weather is still cooperating.

Protect It. Improve It. Enjoy It.
Your home is one of your biggest investments, but it’s also so much more than that. It’s where family gathers, friends come over, holidays are celebrated, and everyday memories are made. Sometimes taking care of that investment means repairing a roof or replacing siding. Other times, it means creating a new space that makes you fall in love with your home all over again. So, what’s on your home wish list?
A new exterior? A screened-in porch? A finished basement? More room for vehicles, toys, tools, or hobbies with a garage addition? Whatever project you’ve been talking about, Fulsaas Exteriors is ready to help turn “someday” into a plan.
Fall is a season of change—and maybe it’s time for a little change around your home, too.
