Is Your Plumbing Ready for a Wet Valley Winter?

What Central Valley homeowners should watch for when the rain starts falling

Here in the Central Valley, winter usually doesn’t mean snow-covered streets or weeks of freezing temperatures. What we do get is rain and when a wet winter settles in, all that water can reveal plumbing problems that may have been quietly developing throughout the year.

A little preparation and knowing what warning signs to look for can help homeowners catch a small problem before it turns into a messy winter emergency.

Pay Attention to Slow Drains

A sink, shower, or tub that takes a little longer than usual to drain can be easy to ignore. But if you notice multiple drains slowing down at the same time, it may be a sign of a problem farther down your plumbing or sewer system.

Don’t wait until a drain stops completely. Slow drainage, recurring clogs, or water backing up into another fixture are all good reasons to have the system checked.

Listen for Gurgling Toilets and Drains

Your plumbing shouldn’t have much to say.

Gurgling or bubbling sounds coming from a toilet or drain can indicate that air isn’t moving properly through the drainage system or that wastewater is having trouble flowing through the line.

If a toilet bubbles when you run a nearby sink, or you hear unusual gurgling from your drains, pay attention especially if you’re also experiencing slow drainage.

Watch for Sewer Line Warning Signs

Wet weather can make an existing sewer-line problem much more noticeable. Older pipes, tree-root intrusion, cracks, deterioration, or other damage can already be restricting the line before the first major storm arrives.

Warning signs can include multiple slow drains, recurring backups, sewage odors, unusually soggy areas in the yard, or wastewater appearing around a cleanout.

If you’ve been dealing with recurring sewer or drain problems, having the line evaluated before the heaviest rain arrives may save you from a much bigger headache later.

Make Sure Rainwater Has Somewhere to Go

Before a major storm, take a walk around your property. Gutters and downspouts should be clear and rainwater should be directed away from the home’s foundation whenever possible.

Look for areas where water tends to collect and keep an eye on unusually wet or soggy spots. Proper drainage around your property can make a big difference when several days of rain hit the Valley at once.

Don’t Forget About Your Water Heater

Your water heater works year-round, but winter can make an aging or poorly maintained unit more noticeable. Colder incoming water and increased demand for hot showers can mean your water heater has to work harder to provide the hot water your family expects.

Pay attention to inconsistent water temperatures, unusual noises, rusty or discolored hot water, moisture around the unit, or a noticeable decline in the amount of hot water available.

Regular maintenance can also help extend the life of your water heater and catch potential problems before you’re suddenly left without hot water.

Know Where Your Water Shutoff Is

Every homeowner should know how to shut off the water to their home.

If a pipe breaks or a major leak develops, quickly shutting off the water can dramatically reduce the amount of damage. Don’t wait for an emergency to figure it out. Locate your main shutoff ahead of time and make sure the adults in your household know where it is and how to use it.

Take Care of the Little Signs Before the Storm

One of the best things you can do before a wet Valley winter is simply pay attention.

A slow drain, strange smell, gurgling toilet, recurring clog, small leak, or struggling water heater may not seem urgent on a sunny day. But plumbing problems rarely choose a convenient time to get worse.

If something doesn’t seem right, getting it checked before the next stretch of heavy rain can give you peace of mind and potentially prevent a much larger repair.
