Pumpkins, Football … and the Place We Call Home

There’s something about October in Minnesota that makes home feel just a little more special.

Maybe it’s the trees putting on their annual show, the first crisp mornings that have us reaching for a favorite sweater, or weekends filled with football, pumpkin patches, apple orchards and kids debating the all-important question: What should I be for Halloween?

October has a way of bringing us back to the places — and people — that matter most.

Our homes become gathering places for Vikings games and Sunday chili, front porches get dressed up with pumpkins and mums, and neighborhood sidewalks fill with little ghosts, superheroes and princesses on Halloween night. It’s the season of bonfires, warm drinks, colorful drives and squeezing in those last outdoor evenings before Minnesota reminds us what comes next.

October is also Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a reminder that community means more than simply living near one another. It means supporting friends and neighbors through difficult seasons, celebrating survivors, remembering those we’ve lost and encouraging the people we love to take care of themselves.

And perhaps that’s what makes fall such a natural time to think about home.

In real estate, we talk a lot about bedrooms, bathrooms, square footage and market value. Those things certainly matter — but they’re rarely what people remember most.

They remember the kitchen where everyone crowded around the island during the big game. The backyard where the kids played in piles of leaves. The neighborhood where trick-or-treating became an annual tradition. The porch where neighbors stop to talk. The dining room that somehow managed to fit “just one more” person around the Thanksgiving table.

A house is a structure. A home becomes part of your story.

So this October, enjoy the pumpkin patches. Cheer loudly for your favorite team. Take the scenic route just because the leaves are beautiful. Check in on someone who might need a little extra support. Hand out the good Halloween candy.

And when you walk through your own front door at the end of the day, take a moment to appreciate the memories being made right where you are.

Because ultimately, real estate isn’t really about houses.

It’s about helping people find the place where life happens.
