The Art of the Guest Room: Luxurious Updates That Will Have Your Guests Begging to Stay

The holidays are coming, and so are your in-laws. Before the guest list fills up and the calendar goes sideways, now is the perfect time to give that guest room the refresh it deserves. And I promise, this is more fun than it sounds.

Start With the Bed (Your Guests Will Thank You)

Nothing says “we’re glad you’re here” quite like sinking into a beautifully made bed with custom linens. And I don’t mean the kind you grab off a department store shelf. I mean custom — tailored to your room’s palette, your aesthetic, and honestly, your personality.

Custom bedding opens up a world of possibilities: duvet covers in gorgeous woven fabrics, decorative shams that actually coordinate with your window treatments, throw pillows in complementary textures, and bed skirts that finish the look the way a great hem finishes a dress. But here’s what really sets custom apart — the feel. Quality custom sheets with any thread count in a long-staple cotton or linen blend are an entirely different experience from anything off a big-box shelf. Your guests will sleep better, feel more pampered, and probably not want to leave. (You’ve been warned.)

Windows: Where the Magic Really Layers

Now let’s talk windows, because this is where a guest room transforms from “nice” to “editorial.”

Layering window treatments is one of my favorite design moves, and it works beautifully in a guest suite. Start with a relaxed roman shade or a sleek roller shade in a soft, textural fabric — ideally a room-darkening option. Morning sun through an east-facing window is nobody’s idea of a good time, especially after a holiday party. A quality blackout shade means your guests sleep until they’re ready, not when the sun beams blast them at sunrise.

Layer over that with a soft drapery panel or a tailored valance in a fabric that coordinates with your bedding. Not matching — coordinating. Think of it like getting dressed: you don’t want your shirt and pants to match exactly, but they should clearly belong together. The result is a layered, lush, pulled-together look that feels like a boutique hotel, only warmer and more personal.

Don’t Forget the Floor

A beautiful area rug anchors the room and adds softness underfoot — essential when someone is padding around barefoot at midnight looking for the bathroom. When it comes to rug options, there are two approaches that work beautifully in a guest bedroom. A room-size rug that extends well beyond the bed creates a grounding, cohesive look that ties the entire space together — think of it as a foundation that makes everything above it feel intentional. For larger guest rooms, this is often the most impactful choice.

Alternatively, a pair of matching runners placed along each side of the bed offers a more tailored, boutique-hotel feel while still delivering that soft landing for bare feet first thing in the morning. Either way, the texture and pattern of your rug is an opportunity to add warmth, color, and another layer of personality to the room — and a well-chosen rug can beautifully bridge the colors in your bedding and window treatments, pulling the whole design together.

The Welcome Touches That Matter Most

A few finishing details go a long way: fresh flowers or a small plant, a carafe of water with a glass on the nightstand, a few good books or a local magazine, quality hand lotion and an extra blanket folded at the foot of the bed. A small tray with snacks. A luggage rack so no one has to live out of a suitcase on the floor.

The goal is simple: walk into that room and ask yourself, would I want to stay here? Working with an interior designer takes the guesswork out of that question entirely. A designer helps you navigate the overwhelming world of fabrics, finishes, and furnishings — selecting custom bedding, window treatments, and rugs that work together beautifully and reflect your home’s personality. The result is a space that feels intentional, cohesive, and genuinely welcoming — the kind of guest room your visitors will talk about long after the holidays are over.
