The Finishing Touch: 5 Details That Can Transform a Room

Have you ever looked around a room and felt that something was missing, even though you have all the furniture you need? Often, it isn’t about buying more. It’s the finishing details, and getting their scale, placement and proportion right, that can take a room from simply furnished to thoughtfully designed.

Here are five details that can make a surprisingly big difference.

1. Get the Rug Size Right

A rug helps anchor a room and visually connects the furniture. One of the most common mistakes is choosing a rug that is too small, making the furniture feel disconnected. In a living room, ideally the front legs of the sofa and chairs should sit on the rug. In a dining room, the rug should extend far enough beyond the table that chairs remain on it when pulled out.

2. Give Your Windows the Right Treatment

Window treatments do much more than provide privacy. They add softness, height and another layer of texture to a room. Drapery panels hung higher and wider than the window can make both the windows and the room feel larger. Choose fabrics and colours that complement the overall space rather than treating the windows as a separate element.

3. Layer Your Lighting

Relying on one ceiling fixture can leave a room feeling flat. A well-designed space uses different sources of light at different heights. Combine overhead lighting with table lamps, floor lamps or sconces to create warmth and dimension. Adding dimmers also allows you to adjust the mood from bright and functional to soft and relaxed.

4. Pay Attention to Art Placement

Beautiful artwork can lose its impact when it is too small for the wall or hung too high. Choose pieces that relate to the scale of the furniture below them and, as a general guide, hang artwork so its centre is close to eye level. When grouping multiple pieces, keep the spacing between them relatively tight so they read as one composition.

5. Add Personality Through Accessories

Accessories are where a room starts to feel personal. Books, greenery, decorative objects, pillows and throws introduce colour, texture and character. Rather than filling every surface, choose a few meaningful pieces and vary their height, shape and texture. Leaving some negative space allows those pieces to stand out.

A finished room isn’t necessarily one with more things. Often, it is one where every element feels considered and connected. Paying attention to these final layers can completely change how a room looks, feels and functions.
