Training Before the Moment: Why Preparedness Matters in Twin Falls

There are moments that change how a community sees itself. For many of us in the Magic Valley, August 1st was one of those moments. In the days and weeks since, conversations across Twin Falls have shifted — toward safety, toward preparedness, toward what it actually means to be ready when seconds matter. This isn’t an article about that day. It’s about what comes after: the training, the mindset, and the skills that can make a difference before the next moment ever arrives.

Owning a gun shop and selling guns, gear, ammo, and accessories every day, I get to see a lot of our community. At QRF we’ve always placed a huge emphasis on training. Each firearm we sell, each person we talk to, we make a point of bringing up the importance of seeking out the right training. Simply owning a firearm — even a fully accessorized one — doesn’t make someone prepared. It takes a change of mindset, motivation, and dedication to train yourself to a point of true preparedness. Many people miss the mark when seeking firearms training by finding a source that does a great job teaching accurate, fast shooting — which is valuable — but misses the fundamentals of the how’s and why’s behind performing under the stress of a real fight, not just on a square range. In this article, we’ll cover pistol training, rifle training, CCW training, and medical training.

Pistol Training

Train how you fight. Pistol training is incredibly important, as your handgun is often going to be your primary firearm in a concealed carry situation. Pistols are small and simple to conceal, making them a great choice for day-to-day defensive carry. But being a small firearm is also what makes them difficult to run well. Learning proper fundamentals helps you shoot quickly and accurately, and teaches you how to fight and move while doing so. For more information, give us a call — we offer basic pistol classes and private instruction.

Rifle/Carbine Training

Rifles are becoming more popular in the defensive realm, and for good reason. They’re easier to control than a pistol, carry a higher capacity, and can provide the stopping power that may be needed to keep yourself and your loved ones safe. They aren’t practical for concealed carry, but having a good vehicle or home-defense option is a smart choice — one that comes with the responsibility of training and securing it properly. Ask us about our Basic Carbine Course this month (October) for more details.

Firearms training is a perishable skill. Studies show roughly 60% of Americans have sought out training with their firearms — but sadly, only about 10% seek regular training. If your training isn’t recent, I want to encourage you to seek out good instruction and keep up with it. This doesn’t just promote firearms safety; it could very well be what keeps you and your loved ones safe when the time comes.

CCW Training

CCW training includes legal considerations that we cover in class with a local expert. This training is incredibly valuable, since many situations won’t call for using your firearm at all — understanding the proper legalities and de-escalation is just as important as marksmanship. We offer CCW classes each month at QRF that leave you with a certificate for your Idaho Enhanced Concealed Weapons License, along with the knowledge and confidence to carry responsibly day-to-day.

Medical Training

Medical training is, without a doubt, the most overlooked category. I believe most people know how important it is, but assume it’ll be someone else’s problem when the moment comes. Recent studies estimate that 57% of civilian hemorrhage deaths could have been prevented with proper bleeding control. Another study found that 93% of civilians who used proper bleeding control techniques were successful. And a national survey found that roughly 9 out of 10 people would be willing to help a bleeding stranger — if they only knew how.

With research showing just how much of a difference this training makes, it’s worth asking why more of us don’t prioritize it. Through my time in the military and in law enforcement, I saw firsthand how important this training is, and at QRF we take that mindset seriously. For more details, contact us and ask about our new Stop the Bleed course, taught by a real medical professional.

None of this is about being afraid. It’s about being ready. Twin Falls is a strong, capable community, and the best way we can honor that is by taking preparedness seriously — not just in the moment after something happens, but every day before it. Whether it’s pistol, rifle, CCW, or medical training, we’d love to help you take that next step. Stop by QRF, ask us questions, and let’s build that readiness together.
