Have you ever noticed a musty, moldy smell in your home that you swear is coming from somewhere, but you just can’t find it?
You’ve checked the walls, crawlspace, under the sinks, and around the bathtub. But have you ever considered that the smell you’re chasing could actually be coming from somewhere you rarely see, your ductwork or HVAC system?
When most homeowners think about heating and air conditioning, they picture the furnace, outdoor unit, or thermostat. But your ductwork is responsible for carrying air throughout your entire home.
I like to think of ductwork as the highway your home’s air travels on. If those ducts are leaking, dirty, damaged, or exposed to moisture, it can affect not only your comfort and energy bills, but potentially the quality of the air your family breathes.
What Could Be Hiding in Your HVAC System?
Your air conditioning system naturally deals with moisture as it cools and dehumidifies your home. Combine unwanted moisture with dust and debris, and certain areas of an HVAC or duct system can develop conditions that support mold, mildew, or other microbial growth.
The problem is that much of your ductwork and HVAC system is hidden. You could have an issue developing somewhere you haven’t looked.
Dust, pollen, pet dander, mold spores, and other airborne particles can also make their way into the system. Leaky ductwork may even pull unwanted air from crawlspaces, attics, garages, and other unconditioned areas.
And remember: the air moving through that system is eventually being delivered into your bedrooms, living room, kitchen, and other areas where your family spends its time.
Could Your Indoor Air Be Affecting How You Feel?
Headaches, stuffiness, coughing, irritated eyes, allergy symptoms, and breathing discomfort can have many different causes and don’t automatically mean you have an HVAC problem.
However, people who are sensitive to dust, pollen, mold, pet dander, and other airborne irritants may notice symptoms associated with poor indoor air quality.
If you notice that you or your family seem to feel worse at home, your indoor environment may be worth investigating.
Duct Cleaning May Only Be Part of the Solution
Sometimes duct cleaning is appropriate, but we don’t believe in automatically assuming dirty ducts are the entire problem.
If your ductwork is leaking, pulling air from a crawlspace or attic, exposed to excessive moisture, or your HVAC equipment itself needs attention, simply cleaning the ducts may not address the underlying cause.
That’s why it’s important to look at the entire system.
Depending on the home, solutions could include duct cleaning, duct sealing, better filtration, humidity control, fresh-air ventilation, equipment cleaning, or correcting airflow problems.
