Generosity has long been a defining characteristic of communities like Plain City. Whether supporting local churches, schools, nonprofits or community initiatives, many residents share a desire to make a meaningful difference. Yet the most impactful givers understand that generosity – more than simply writing a check – is about giving with purpose, strategy and heart.

Through more than 80 years of Everence serving individuals and families, we have observed several habits that consistently characterize highly impactful givers.

1. Be intentional

Rather than giving sporadically or only when needs arise, develop a thoughtful giving plan. Identify the causes and organizations that align with your values, and determine how you can make the greatest impact through your time, talents and financial resources.

2. Stay connected

The most effective givers maintain meaningful relationships with the organizations they support. They ask questions, learn about challenges and opportunities, and look for ways to contribute beyond financial gifts. Strong relationships often lead to deeper engagement and greater impact.

3. Think like a philanthropist

Impactful giving requires both compassion and curiosity. Stay informed about emerging needs in your community and carefully evaluate which organizations are creating measurable change. Thoughtful generosity seeks long-term outcomes rather than short-term recognition.

4. Leverage your giving

A variety of charitable and financial planning strategies can help increase the effectiveness of your generosity. Whether through donor advised funds, charitable trusts or other tools, seeking professional guidance may allow you to maximize your impact while remaining a wise steward of your resources.

5. Champion the cause

Beyond contributing, impactful givers inspire others to participate. Share stories of lives being changed, express gratitude to those doing the work, and encourage friends and family to become involved. Your enthusiasm and advocacy can multiply the impact of your generosity.

In the end, impactful giving is not measured solely by the dollars donated, but by the lives transformed. When generosity is intentional, informed, and relational, communities become stronger, more connected and better equipped to flourish for generations to come.
