Before the Guests Arrive, Look Up

November has a way of shifting our attention indoors. We’re thinking about family coming to town, what’s on the Thanksgiving menu, and whether there are enough chairs around the table. Meanwhile, the roof is doing its usual job: quietly keeping the whole gathering safe.

Across North Texas, fall brings cooler temperatures, changing weather, and plenty of leaves and small branches. Debris can collect in gutters and roof valleys, slowing the path rainwater needs to take. A little attention now can spare you an unwelcome surprise when the house is full of guests.

Start with a walk around your home. From the ground, look for shingles that appear missing, lifted, or out of place. Check whether gutters are pulling away from the house or spilling water over the sides. If a downspout empties right beside the foundation, consider where that water goes during a heavy rain.

Then take a look inside. A new ceiling stain, damp spot in the attic, or musty smell deserves attention, even if you don’t see water dripping. Roof leaks have a talent for showing up somewhere other than where they started. Think of a ceiling stain as a clue, not a map.

One area homeowners often overlook is flashing, the material that helps keep water out where a roof meets a wall, chimney, vent, or skylight. Those transitions matter just as much as the shingles themselves. If you notice a problem, have a roofing professional assess it rather than climbing up for a closer look.

The good news? Finding a concern doesn’t automatically mean you need a new roof. Sometimes the right answer is clearing a drainage path or making a focused repair. The important thing is understanding what you’re seeing and addressing it before the next stretch of wet weather.

At Verde Roofing, we offer complimentary roof inspections for homeowners across North Texas. I believe every homeowner deserves a clear explanation of what needs attention and why, without pressure or unnecessary recommendations.

My November advice is simple: give your roof a few minutes of thought before you turn your attention to the turkey. It has been looking after your home all year. This is a good time to return the favor.
