A Little Homework Before Your Project Begins Can Save A Lot of Headaches Later

Haslet is changing. New homes, new neighborhoods and new families are becoming part of a community I have called home for more than 25 years.

Growth brings opportunity, but it also gives those of us who build here a responsibility to help Haslet grow thoughtfully and protect the value of the homes our neighbors have worked hard to own.

Whether you’re remodeling a kitchen, adding space, building a shop or outdoor living area, or replacing a roof, choosing the right contractor is one of the most important decisions you can make about your home.

Here are seven questions every homeowner should ask.

1. How much experience is behind the company?

There is no substitute for experience, especially when something unexpected happens. I began learning the building trades alongside my father in 1972 and started Hill Construction and Roofing in 1983. Decades in construction teach you what works, what fails and where problems tend to hide.

2. Are you insured?

Ask, and don’t feel uncomfortable doing it. A professional contractor should readily discuss insurance and provide appropriate documentation. Your home is likely one of your largest investments, so make sure it is protected.

3. What exactly is included in my price?

Never compare estimates by the bottom line alone. “Remodel kitchen” is not a complete scope of work. Ask what is included for materials, demolition, electrical, plumbing, flooring, painting, cleanup and other project needs.

4. What are the allowances?

If you haven’t made final selections, your proposal may include allowances for cabinets, countertops, flooring or fixtures. Ask how those amounts were determined. Unrealistically low allowances can make a bid look attractive now and create surprises later.

5. How will you handle changes?

Changes happen. You may uncover an unexpected condition or simply decide you want something different. Ask how changes will be priced, documented and approved before additional work begins.

6. Who will communicate with me?

Construction is personal. Know who will answer your questions, oversee the project and keep you informed.

Craftsmanship matters. So do honesty, transparency and communication.

7. Does the contractor understand what I’m trying to accomplish?

A good builder should ask why you want the improvement. Do you need more room, better functionality, greater energy efficiency or simply a better use of the property you already love?

The best solution isn’t always the biggest or most expensive one. Good design and experienced construction should improve the way you live while respecting your budget and property.

Building With Care

Haslet isn’t simply where we work, it’s our home.

At HCS, we believe in long-term value, thoughtful design, responsible use of materials and respect for the character of our community.

Our philosophy is simple:

Tell people the truth. Do what you say you’ll do. And build things to last.

Because a better project starts with the right questions.
